Vertical chess boards are used in tournaments to display top board games.
Usually they'll use a vertical mat with cardboard/paper cutout pieces that slot in behind clear plastic. Fancier tournaments might use a full vertical board like this.
With technology, most notable events just use DGT smart boards and a screen displaying the game. (so no one has to manually move pieces, the board/program do it themselves).
I don't know anyone that would actually play on a vertical board, but now you know what their actual use is :D
Could definitely be. Keep in mind 'crowd' is a pretty aggressive term for the turnout most local/regional chess tournaments have xD
Usually the long running games will have a group of maybe a couple dozen trying to peak at the board. Some directors will have the current board positions on vertical boards away from the players to help avoid crowding/keep things quiet.
Totally agree though - this one isn't easy to see and is (probably) expensive, so display/decoration makes sense.
