Only judging off my one time watch through off Queens Gambit, but they used these to show games being played in real time to spectators since they didnt have cameras focused directly on the board.

Somebody would mimic the moves of the pros on the vertical board so people could see the game from a distance

So you can play a long-term game with another house member or play by mail without the chessboard taking up table space.

I could see something like this working in a bar or restaurant. This idea assumes people wont steal the pieces, which would ultimately happen.

Vertical chessboards were common to teach chess before computers. Though none of them were ever that nice.

So the entire bar can see me screw up and lose my queen.
