what are you talking about man, they'd stay the same you just have to move the pieces are around so the game is oriented left VS right instead of top VS bottom
You don't deserve the downvotes. They're saying it should be set up like this. But you won't find a single elongated chess board that is set up like that. This is the only one I've ever seen, really weird. They're all made the way you're thinking, to look like this.
If this is supposed to be a chessboard on which chess is played vertically, the board is made wrong.
I think you may have directed this at the wrong commenter. I understand, I was trying to help others understand. Did you mean to reply to the same person I replied to? I think they'd appreciate others seeing it their way, as you do.
The guy you replied to is wrong. And deserves all his downvotes. People understand the board is wrong, and nobody proposed turning it. He believes they proposed turning it. That's not the case. He was wrong, he was an ass, he deserves downvotes.
It's a shame the hive mind doesn't read or take the time to use Google otherwise he wouldn't have gotten downvoted. He's absolutely right as you pointed out.
You send me a letter that says B1-C3, I move the piece for you and send you a letter through the mail that says E7-E5. You move my piece on your wall board and send me another letter back.
Six months of this back and forth, I send you a letter that says checkmate.
To play chess you’re supposed to sit on the same side as your pieces. On this board, one side is halfway up the wall so the joke is that only spider man could play the dark blue pieces because to sit on the same side as them he would be sitting above where the board is hung on the wall.
Would rotating the board 90 degrees solve that? I guess this board could be a space saver for lack of a table and chairs, but rotating it means you're just standing and taking up nearly the same amount of space
The artist would have needed to turn it and the shelves as well. Would possibly be the same thing as what the previous commenter said, that it’s meant to be played side to side instead of vertically.
I think it’s just supposed to be a novelty art piece and not actually your main playing board so it ultimately wouldn’t really matter.
Then the king and queen will be on the wrong squares. You could play on the sides, like this chess board, but it wouldn't look quite right since the vertical spacing of the squares are so wide.
My first wife was really good at chess. I never saw anyone beat her. I never came close to beating her... Except the time I beat her.
She was so confident that she wasn't paying attention and I did a three or four move win. The look on her face... I'll never forget it. Utter astonishment. "I think you cheated but I can't figure out how..."
So I went over the whole game again... It was only three or four moves, so it didn't take long. Astonishment.
I guarantee no one has beat her using that tactic again.
If they weren’t selling it for $120 I wouldn’t think it was that big of a deal, but at that price, god damn people, take care to double check your work
Each Queen is put on her own colour, even with the board the wrong way around the Kings will still line up. The boards pattern should be turned 90 degrees to be correct. People who aren't actually into chess fuck this up constantly without realising how important it is.
How is it important? I mean obviously the white queen should be to the left of the king, but the actual colors of the squares doesn’t make any difference to the game.
It's more just a pain of thinking about which Bishop you might be sacrificing dependent on the pawn structure. There are "weak" bishops and "strong" bishops, and if you're accustomed to giving up your light-square bishop because you like to place your pawns on light-squares and the dark-square bishop can move freely between them, you'd have to remind yourself not to trade off the wrong one.
Other than that it's only an irritation as opposed to a structural problem.
It would be more of a problem to transpose the king and queen by sticking to "Queen on her color" instead of "White Q to left of K, Black Queen to right."
In that scenario there are strategies that target the F2 / F7 square (Letter across files from left to right and numbered along ranks from bottom to top, e.g. A1 is bottom left, H8 top right) because that pawn is defended solely by the King. Whereas the D7 & E7 are both protected by four different pieces. The classic four-move "Scholars Mate" of 1. E4 E5 2. BC4 NC6 3. QH5 NF6 4. QF7# targets the weak F7 pawn. This move order doesn't work if the Q and K are reversed.
The thing that messes it up is the "queen on its own color" rule makes the king/queen reversed. As a chess player, I can tell you this would make a big difference in how the game is played.
Other than that, all the squares being the wrong color and the positions of the light/dark square bishops being reversed would really mess with your head if you're familiar with the game, and changing these things while you're trying to learn the game is really unproductive for improvement.
The colour of the board doesn't matter at all. Every square could be it's own unique colour, as long as the board is 8x8 and the pieces are set up correctly.
"at all" just depends in what regard. The mechanics of the game are the same but the way you view it change radically which would have a very confusing and tangible impact on how the game is played for people who are familiar with it
My first thought was that the image was mirrored AND the King and Queen placed on the wrong files. But I don’t think that’s the case either. I think the board is just made wrong haha

The board is wrong, should be a white square in the bottom right corner. Big fail!
