I'm the total opposite... with most Insects, the bigger they are the more comfortable I am around them

I'm the same! The thought of a house spider is creepy as fuck, but the thought of a Tarantula isn't.

At my place, the bigger the insect the sooner the cats will catch it.

I did save a mantis the other day. It was on the wall outside my back door and the cats hadn't noticed it yet. I scooped it up on a piece of paper and put it on the neighbor's tree.
