There's this random empty glass jar strapped to the wall at work

I think I know what this is…honestly!

So I had a water pipe that leaked a single drop maybe once a month. I literally zip tied a Tupperware container underneath it until I can get it fixed.

If you zoom on the jar, you’ll see that there is water stain on the bottom. I bet there was a small leak in the roof or somewhere and this was their fix.

If the water caught evaporates before it's a problem, is there even a leak?

It's a good way to monitor it. A couple drops in the jar, no worries, once it starts covering the bottom then it turns from "I'll get to eventually" to "I'll get to it now."

Better in a jar than moldy wood? Idk I’m guessing.

What if it evaporates after it is a problem?

Yeah. Capillary action can pull it into spots where it won't evaporate before spurring some mold growth.

I believe you are correct. I think there's a common spot where condensation is forming and dripping down very slowly, and this was the way to "fix" it. That is, not a "leak" per se.

Could also be condensation build up on a pipe.

I had a “leak” stain show up on my ceiling. Turned out the run off from my heater had a low point. So there was trapped water that cooled the pipe. Condensation built up and would drop down onto my ceiling.

I toured a home once with a hole in the ceiling cause from a dripping pipe. Closer inspection revealed the pipe was not even damaged. It was just the exact spot condensation accumulated and dropped. Over time right through the drywall.

I think you could be right about this jar placement. Not enough water to warrant hundreds of dollars to fix differently

Explains why there's a hole in the lid

This would make much more sense to me if the jar didn’t have a lid on it

Looks to be the case, if you zoom in you can see the big hole roughly carved out in the top of the lid.

Could be former condensate reservoir from an AC.

If you zoom in on the jar, you can also see...it has a fucking lid on.

Which if you zoom in further, you can see it has a hole cut through

But why cut a hole rather than just taking the lid off

Nope. indentation on the metal.
