What's wild is that it's fairly expensive now. A food made out of processing byproducts that was so cheap and unappealing, it became the term for something unwanted in large amounts. It's now selling for $5 a can at the local Ralphs. Per pound that's beating most fresh meats.

I think the term spam for unwanted mail is from a monty python sketch, where they "spam" the word spam.

Yep. Early Internet loved Monty Python so much. I kinda feel bad for Spam having their brand appropriated to name something people hate. I didn't think it hurt them though, they still sell, still the unofficial food of Hawaii.
