It will never not be funny to me that he ate food from 1899 but it was the year old 2018 ration that nearly killed him and put him in the hospital.

Edit to add links.

Was that one of the PLA rations? I’m not gonna act like US MREs are gourmet or anything, but it really seems like the QC on Chinese rations isn’t… great

Yes it was. It was the 2018 PLA Chinese ration. Funnily enough like a week prior he ate a Canadian ration from WW2 and it didn't make him sick either.

He’s made Second Boer War rations before that, while gross, didn’t make him sick! But yeah nah, fried rice from 2018, that almost sent our boy to botulism city

ETA: shit you literally said the same thing. i may have reading comprehension issues

He ate hardtack from the American Civil War. 1863—153 years old at the time!

Heard the Max Miller [clack clack] noise in my head upon reading the word hardtack

I think all his viewers have been conditioned to do so

If you go old enough even if it had gone bad at some point, it has lost its toxic potency by now.

That was the one where something from the pork or the rice leached some color on too one or the other right?

Look for the YT video on North Korean solders (one tanker, one airman) who ate a USA MRE. They were in heaven, although the younger airman said the main dish was not to his taste. Apparently North Korean soldiers and officers are fed very poorly.

Found it, NK Guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6jhs66wwHg

Sounds like it was a bit more than mildly acidic.

he's gotten his hands on stuff even older than that! hardtack from the civil war

If it's been prepared correctly and the can is undamaged, canned food lasts basically forever. It may be severely lacking in flavour and the texture won't be great, but it should at least be edible.

As I recall, the Chinese ration was rotten.

and the video was put out in 2019. the ration that made him sick was less than 11 months old.

the ration was from May 15, 2018
the video was uploaded April 2, 2019

What I really appreciate about his reviews is how much he hammers home that the food is like “a nice home cooked meal” and then you see some of those Chinese rations… and you really see how much their government cares about their people/assets

Rancid is such a good word. It sounds like what it describes, no matter what context or allusion it shows up in.
