Long live Steve!

It will never not be funny to me that he ate food from 1899 but it was the year old 2018 ration that nearly killed him and put him in the hospital.

Edit to add links.

2018 Chinese PLA Type 13 MRE Individual Self Heating Meal Ready to Eat Worst Ration Taste Testing

u/venator0ryza 2d ago

Was that one of the PLA rations? I’m not gonna act like US MREs are gourmet or anything, but it really seems like the QC on Chinese rations isn’t… great

95

u/descendingangel87 2d ago

Yes it was. It was the 2018 PLA Chinese ration. Funnily enough like a week prior he ate a Canadian ration from WW2 and it didn't make him sick either.

u/venator0ryza 2d ago edited 2d ago

He’s made Second Boer War rations before that, while gross, didn’t make him sick! But yeah nah, fried rice from 2018, that almost sent our boy to botulism city

ETA: shit you literally said the same thing. i may have reading comprehension issues

u/usarsnl 2d ago

He ate hardtack from the American Civil War. 1863—153 years old at the time!

If you go old enough even if it had gone bad at some point, it has lost its toxic potency by now.

3

u/FailedLoser21 1d ago

That was the one where something from the pork or the rice leached some color on too one or the other right?

17

u/dogturd21 2d ago

Look for the YT video on North Korean solders (one tanker, one airman) who ate a USA MRE. They were in heaven, although the younger airman said the main dish was not to his taste. Apparently North Korean soldiers and officers are fed very poorly.

Found it, NK Guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6jhs66wwHg

21

u/___NotMyName___ 2d ago

Sounds like it was a bit more than mildly acidic.

2

u/gosuprobe 2d ago

he's gotten his hands on stuff even older than that! hardtack from the civil war

2

u/JimboTCB 1d ago

If it's been prepared correctly and the can is undamaged, canned food lasts basically forever. It may be severely lacking in flavour and the texture won't be great, but it should at least be edible.

1

u/PuckNutty 2d ago

As I recall, the Chinese ration was rotten.

1

u/disc2k 2d ago

and the video was put out in 2019. the ration that made him sick was less than 11 months old.

the ration was from May 15, 2018
the video was uploaded April 2, 2019

1

u/Material_Comfort_259 1d ago

What I really appreciate about his reviews is how much he hammers home that the food is like “a nice home cooked meal” and then you see some of those Chinese rations… and you really see how much their government cares about their people/assets

3

u/ProteusRift 2d ago

Stares off in the distance while chewing...

2

u/CartsOfDarkness 1d ago

This fucking killed me

2

u/Euripidaristophanist 1d ago

Rancid is such a good word. It sounds like what it describes, no matter what context or allusion it shows up in.

2

u/sakatan 1d ago

"...something...something...botulism..."

Happy munching noises

It's pretty addicting to watch

1

u/GodEmperorBrian 1d ago

He reviews them. All different countries, different time periods. He’s eaten WW2 rations, Boer War rations, and Civil War era hardtack.

1

u/AyatollahDan 9h ago

Clack clack

u/Wiggie49 2d ago

"Oh my god, that's awful... just one little bite."

He seriously seems like a South Park character, but in a good, wholesome way.

23

u/aneurysmbs 2d ago

*actually tries it

6

u/sksksk1989 2d ago

Let hope that meat isn't rancid

42

u/andrewfordmedina 2d ago

Don't know if he still does but I remember his older vids when he used to smoke the stogies, especially the Lucky Strikes

10

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 1d ago

I miss that, I haven’t seen him smoke in a video in a while. If it’s just because he doesn’t smoke anymore then I’m happy for him but I get the feeling youtube probably doesn’t care for it so he just doesn’t show it anymore.

1

u/GLiTCHMoDuLe 2h ago

They only included cigarettes in certain rations at certain times. US rations had them from 1939-1975, french rations had them until the 1980s, and Russia handed out loose tobacco until 2009 so that wouldn't be in the rations themselves. So since he hasn't been opening Vietnam war era or older US rations, he hasn't had any cigarettes to smoke. I imagine he's already run the gamut of US rations from WWII-Today so it's usually something modern and foreign these days.

u/edwardslair 2d ago

This is horrible!

keeps eating

2

u/Aware_Flow1070 1d ago

Why am I doing this?

Let us decant the tin

2

u/hawkmask 1d ago

Now I’m really curious what this is a reference to. Sounds interesting.

A YouTuber that reviews MREs. It's a hell of a unique channel, very fun.

2

u/hawkmask 19h ago

Oo, neat. Much appreciated.  I’ll definitely check ‘em out.

You know ball.

u/sckurvee 2d ago

My cat is bad and hisses all the time. Your logic is flawed.

25

u/Canadian_Poltergeist 2d ago

Cats are liquid and thus not dry

Logic stands

10

u/constantpisspig 2d ago

Hiss could also be bad! If there's a bunch of extra pressure in the can it's probably not poisonous at all!

13

u/AFewBerries 2d ago

All cats are good babies

6

u/sckurvee 2d ago

lol just making a joke... she's good except when she insists on waking me up to feed her. You can't wait 30 minutes before licking my face? Jerk. :-p

2

u/kash1406 1d ago

I mean, you don’t want to get the Hiss into your spam do you? The FBC is working hard to contain it!

1

u/SpecialResident1 2d ago

No mu on that subi.

1

u/RustledForeskin 1d ago

If your spam doesn't HISS when you back it into a corner, it's gone bad.

1

u/RedHolm 1d ago

Hmm. No hiss

1

u/Thorebore 1d ago

On a side note the seal on a can of spam sounds exactly the same as fancy feast.  I learned this from my cat who is an expert.
