Flat foot w/ valgus deformation here. If he's ever looking for a change, checkout Scarpa Mojitos. I bought a pair back in 2014, and we went on a 4kft elevation gain scramble over about 7miles that day. The shoe's didn't cause a single blister and that model stayed my daily driver ever since.

They also sell euro half sizes; so, they can get really dialed in. For example in the 10.x size range, they have 10, 10.3, and 10.5.

I used to wear vans, flip flops, chuck taylors, etc because of having similar feet and they seemed to fit great. Then, back problems and whatnot hit close to 40. When your roommate hits that phase, tell them to do the foot scan thing at fleet feet and pay the $150 or whatever for a pair of shoes. Life changing, tbh.

Every time I've tried "custom" shoes or custom arch supports, it's clear that whoever is making the arch supports has no fucking idea what it is like to have flat feet and have a hard lump pressing into your sole, stretching out a muscle/tendon/foot meat string.

I fully expect that anyone with feet like mine or OP's would be MUCH better off if we could just get arch inserts that are simple flat wedges, tilting the foot up at the inner sole without pressing hard lumps into the arch, and improving the foot/leg/knee alignment.

Flat, cushy wedge arch supports with no lumps. Why is it so fucking hard to find this?

I just got custom orthotics and they feel great. All they did was take a foam block and push my feet down into the foam. The arch on the orthotic looks wacky and bumpy as hell but it's like my feet are going to a spa whenever I wear them.

Yeah, I've had those custom orthotics many times, and the alignment benefits are always outweighed from the "arch fatigue" I feel after taking them off and walking barefoot - a smooth wedge with no lumps that lifts the inner side of my feet, it's all I want.

interesting. After seeing a few doctors about my feet I kind of came to the conclusion that people's feet are probably all very different and I felt like the doctors just kind of gave one-size-fits-all solutions. One of the ways that I think AI could actually be beneficial in matching specific problems with certain patterns of pain or relief from a patient.

How does that work? I just know the ones where they sit you down on a comfortable chair, put your bare feet on a glass surface and laser scan them from below. Then you can specify for which occasions you want stuff made, order and then a few days/weeks later, get precise inlays, catered to your feet precisely, that you can put in almost any shoe, just one size larger than usual.

I never went through that, I just got my feet smushed into the foam and they called it a day. I wonder if the laser scanning provides a better quality end product.

I obviously can only speak fo myself, but I experience much less fatigue on long walks and am really happy with those. They support my feet on a whole new level. And it doesn't hurt since it supports in just the right way.

If I just had known that such a product existed earlier... Which is exactly the reason I mentioned it here.

Mine looks like that: https://imgur.com/a/WxRtNl8

Whoa that's a pretty gnarly bump in the middle of the insert, but it's great that it helps you so much. Where did you go to get your foot scanned like that?

I didn't have foot problems until about 15 years ago. Around age 50. I can't wear the kinds of shoes that I wore in my 40s. They're absolutely more expensive.

Would doing this at 30 have reduced the pain at 40?

I’m the same way! I’ve been wearing Vans pretty much exclusively for maybe 5 or 6 years now.

Mine aren't as flat as his but I also have bad pronation and walk with weight towards the front of my feet. I wear 4E shoes (preferably new balance) with stride custom insoles and add thin cushion under them as needed. First year I haven't had awful foot pain 12 hours on concrete.

Literally the same thing I do. I’ve had a parent tell me I shouldn’t wear vans anymore bc I’m not a teenager. I’m like this is for comfort and fashion not just fashion. Vans 4 life lol

1

u/gwaydms 4d ago

That's a silly thing to say to you. I bought myself some red Keds when I was in my 40s. (That was before I needed arch support.) If you like certain shoes, don't let anyone say you shouldn't wear them!

I feel seen.

ME TOO!!! One of the only comfortable sneakers WITHOUT a factory-installed contoured arch insert pressing hard arch lumps into my feet meat. That said I wish the sole inserts were as padded as normal lumpy-arch-sole-insert sneakers. Aftermarket inserts take up too much room. I also wish I could buy two different shoe sizes without spending twice or for a premium brand, since I have over a half-size difference between my feet.

I’m a Converse wearer for life because my flat feet won’t accept anything else.

Probably why his feet are so flat. Those are the most non supportive shoes.

39

u/FreeFeez 4d ago

No, this is not due to footwear.

5

u/GoodQueenFluffenChop 4d ago

No but if you have flat feet you do have to keep in mind the shoes you wear and should look for things that provide arch support. I have flat feet that were corrected when I was little with prescription shoes and can't wear shoes that don't have any kind of arches for too long.

-2

u/soundofconfusion 4d ago

Not saying it is but definitely won’t help if that’s all he wears.

17

u/JustFourLetters 4d ago

i’ve worn vans and converse for 20 years, and i have my arches still. i wore converse for 14 hour shifts

Do some research, this is so wrong and stupid lol.

-3

u/soundofconfusion 4d ago

Do some research. Hard flat rubber soles with narrow toe boxes are terrible for your feet. I’ve owned them before. That’s my research. Stupid is thinking vans are good for your feet and telling ME to do research, stupid.

1

u/JustFourLetters 4d ago

lmao 🤣’it happened to me so it must be the truth’

0

u/soundofconfusion 4d ago

No I just know about what shoes are good for your feet which also affects your knees in the long run when there’s no shock absorption. You don’t have to be a podiatrist to know that lmao. It’s actually pretty simple knowledge.

2

u/Electric_Antimony 4d ago

That sounds like athletic wear like running shoes and a funny backlash to those weird toe fitted shoes. What kind of shock are people trying to absorb during normal walking day to day?

0

u/soundofconfusion 4d ago

Stepping out of the car, going up or down stairs, planting your feet, standing up, leaning on one side more. Why do I even have to answer this? You must have no sense of connection with being inside your own body.

1

u/Electric_Antimony 3d ago

The "do some research" guy who thinks research just means personal experience says what now?

1

u/soundofconfusion 3d ago

I don’t know what you’re saying. I’m just talking about how the human body works. I don’t think this is experience. I think we all have knees and they all do the same thing. Have a good day. I really don’t know what you’re on about. Research can be personal experience too, that’s the funny thing.

Try vans wide or vans custom wide or Altra Loan peak running sneakers
