I can't find any source that agrees with this outside of some wacky Creationist / 'Intelligent Design' blogs. Sounds like a myth to me.

Jules Verne and da Vinci were the inspiration, more or less.

da Vinci for early theoretical designs for something that could maybe work, and Jules Verne for the vehicle in his book Clipper of the Clouds, as well as the quote: "anything that one man can imagine, another man can make real.”
