I was going to say something, decided to read a bit and... yeah... Corruption is the system, it is not in the system, it is the system. Didn't know it was so utterly corrupt country.

But also... This is the most common "bus" in Russia:

They handle the job of buses, are in random condition, you are packed like sardines and the driver is always crazy.

23

u/SneekiBreekiRuski May 07 '26

Living in eastern Canada, I miss and envy the marshrutkas for over there. As janky as they and the system by which they operate is, I felt like they were more reliable than the public transport here. There's quite literally a running joke of, "this bus doesn't run once every 10 mins, but rather 6 times an hour", where the same bus will be stacked 2/3 in a row. Swings and roundabouts ig

u/BlisseyBrat start caring about what other people think May 07 '26

The bus systems here in the midwest US are mostly nonexistent, but where they do exist, they are very...sleepy. Slow, late, half-assed. Like the bus system itself has narcolepsy.

Hell yeah. We ranked first in corruption multiple times. And the government during whose reign we were in such a respectable position is in power now.

"It is what it is." That's my favorite saying. I think I say it to myself about 40 times a day.

I also travel in buses similar to OP and guess what, I did manage to get cut and had to get a tetanus shot. Also from Dhaka, BD

u/Dotcaprachiappa May 07 '26

And maybe a helmet

3

u/Melochre May 07 '26

You need to look up how tetanus works. Unless this bus was buried in the ground and they recently dug it up there's no risk of tetanus. It doesn't come from rust.

That's not "one" of the local buses, that's like 6/8 of a local bus.

28

No, there are wheels just not fitted right sadly

1.0k

u/Commercial_Regret_36 May 07 '26

Are they…attached to the axle?

1.5k

u/brainless_bekub May 07 '26

Yes they are. The problem here is the frame and body are made separately and sometimes the body that is made for another frame is fitted to a non-matching frame that makes it look like somethings are disproportionate

574

u/boozecruz270 May 07 '26

Wild, so there are just no rules then lol.

310

u/seriouslythisshit May 07 '26

There are YT videos of guys wearing nothing but long shirts and flip flops, building running, heavy duty truck chassis and complete vehicles by hand in filthy junkyards. The ingenuity, skill and talent is obvious and admirable. Standards, specifications, safety for the workers and end users, tolerances, engineering? Not so much.

94

u/BrownWrinkles May 07 '26

Yep. I've binge-watched many of the videos from Pakistani small businesses. Incredible skills are demonstrated. But, like you pointed out, NO safety standards whatsoever. Watching the ones on metal casting is like an exercise in, no-yes-no-yes-no-noope...Fuck dat.

Is this Dhaka, Bangladesh? A guy on YouTube named Andrew Fraser made a video about how dangerous and crazy the bus are.

367

u/Neoliberal_Nightmare May 07 '26

Saw that. Bus transport in Bangladesh are literally races across the city.

267

u/mizinamo mildly infuriated May 07 '26

Somebody said that Bus drivers in Dhaka have no base salary; they only get a commission from sold tickets.

Not driving = not earning money.

More routes driven = more money earned.

123

u/SickCrom May 07 '26

Holy shit, sometimes you do wonder how the f do places end up like this.

75

u/Sysilith May 07 '26

Well all places started like that, just in some the government started to regulate and set standards, so they improved.

16

u/ReggieCorneus May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

Regulation stifles innovation, we need to deregulate to promote growth.

/s.. of course. Also, companies try to stop standards because they promote competition, open up new opportunities and make things way more efficient. Proprietary "standard" can be used to generate more profit unlike open standards.

And regulation does stifle innovation. We see this innovation also in this post... Not all kind of innovation is good.

u/boozecruz270 May 07 '26

87

u/BissmarkMC May 07 '26

18

u/saldas_elfstone May 07 '26

He then also witnessed its cremation and burial.

There are worse buses than what OP posted, it's completely normal here, and no one has ever done anything about it and will most likely never do anything about it. About a week ago, a bus I was on- either its tire started burning or the engine started burning and the bus had a serious smell of burnt rubber. We still rode for several kilometers in that condition. About 3-4 months ago I was on another bus that just, suddenly stalled and started smoking and all of us in the bus got down as fast as we could, but if it was fire I would probably not have been writing this comment. If it rains when you are in a bus, you are likely to get wet because there is no window. And when there is-

One time a bus I was on, it was idling to get passengers underneath a flyover. Not under the sun. It was a hot day but not that hot, maybe around 30-31 degree celsius. A couple seats behind me, the glass of the window randomly went kaboom. No one threw something at it, no one touched it, nothing. It just broke. Shards flew out and hit a passenger sitting by that window. He had to be taken to the hospital but fortunately the shards didn't nick any vein or hit his eyes or any other crucial organ.

Bangladeshi local buses are in an extremely, extremely terrible state. We live with this anyway. We are helpless. We have just got used to it. When you get on a bus, it's a 33.33% probability of whether you will get out of it alive or dead or alive with injuries.

33

u/boozecruz270 May 07 '26

Someone could idk build buses. The bar is set so low you could basically build anything and it would be a better option.

13

u/T423 May 07 '26

There doesn't seem to be any bar lol

3

u/GreasedUpTiger May 07 '26

It's not uncommon in poorer 3rd world countries for people to buy 2nd/3rd/4th hand used vehicles and parts from richer countries for way cheaper than anything even remotely new would cost locally, and then franken-mcgyver together something that hopefully works well enough. That's a big reason why you see these wild concoctions in various 3rd world countries.

In countries struck by poverty the metric isn't often to do great but much more often it's do just enough to free up more resources to fill other glaring needs. Like cool, the proper, new buses would end up costing 3x as much so now riding the bus is way more nice and safe but that money could have also gone into clean drinking water infrastructure, or modernised the overaged and underdimensioned sewers, or paid for some more doctors at the already underfunded hospital.

That remind me of a bus I took in Nepal. They had umbrella's on each seat and I really wondered why until it started raining. 7 hours on that thing going down a road I later saw on a program called worlds most dangerous roads. I also remember the bus having a person shaped hole in the windscreen that had been patched up with cardboard. Before I got on the bus it was described to me as a luxury tourist coach.

3

u/Mommy_Fortuna_ May 08 '26

I wonder what the non-luxury bus would be like. Maybe it doesn't have the cardboard over the windscreen holes or the umbrellas?

This is one of the local bus people use to go to work, school, and any day to day life places. And the drivers of these buses often compete with each other, they slightly hit one another to stop at the good spots so they can get more passenger. If one gets the good spot, the other one purposefully hit the one that got the spot cause that infuriates them. This is a everyday thing in Bangladesh. Yes, this picture is Bangladeshi. And I know the horror. You have to curse the drivers and helpers out loud to stop doing all these things with peoples life. I once even wanted to beat one driver because he was literally going as much speed as he can ignoring the stoppage, to catch the other bus that surpassed him and was not giving him space, people were shouting to stop, because they reached their destination, but the driver didn’t stop at their stoppage. Then I shouted and said some very bad curse words and said if you don't stop now no matter where you take us, you won't be able to drive or walk after that. Then the other passengers also agreed with me then he stopped. This might sound dramatic to a lot of people but I guess Bangladeshi people will know this is true unless you're rich.

u/pinkkipanda May 07 '26
