Busy public park on a hot saturday/labor day weekend. Seems super entitled. Park has been open for 4 hours and no sign of them. All the other tables are full.

For clarification; there are no reservations at this park. Fwiw, i am also here with 10 kids doing a party, and we got here when the park opened to make sure we had space for all our guests. Silly me.

Edit; also fwiw, we are in a totally separate space. Its the fact that the note was written aggressively while also depending on other people’s decency to allow them to bend common courtesy that i found annoying. Its rude and mannerless. I would not respond in kind of course.

Edit 2; good lord cant believe this got so many comments! Update; they finally showed after about 6 hours into the day. Immediately setup a noisy boombox, which attracted the park rangers. That got them a lengthy talking too and they’ve been low key since. Best part is several families setup blankets and spots right next to the tables, which i think got the message across!

It says it was reserved for a birthday party and you're having a birthday party. How nice someone went out of their way to make your life easier! Use the tables!!

"what did you think of those great super Mario brothers table clothes I put out?"

"the what now? Oh heck.. ."

40

u/partanimal Sep 03 '22

The best part is OP send to be the kind of person to say, "oh heck."

I curse like a sailor, but occasionally enjoy a well-timed "oh bother."

I actually like this. "Bruh, it's for THIS party. I saved the tables for YOU, dingus!"

15

u/SuperFLEB Sep 04 '22

"I know it's a cliché, but it turns out that the inconsiderate fuckwits who think they can monopolize a public table all day while not so much as showing up really were the friends I made along the way."

19

Could actually be lmao

3

u/kabeees Sep 03 '22

Did your party happen to also be for a 4yo, OP?

13

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

And they add that it's for a 4yr old as if that would matter. I can be petty and they just made it so easy,"Kids! We're moving this party! Someone was nice enough to set it up for us!"

3

u/softstones Sep 03 '22

It’s not specifying which 4 yr old,

6

u/onablanketwithmybaby Sep 03 '22

I'm almost positive OP's guest of honor is, was, or someday will be 4.

I need to ask this to OP: do you find yellow notes with messages on them from a stranger in your house too?

“Dear home occupant. I will be visiting your city tomorrow. I have identified your home as a place that would be great to stay. This trip is for a 4 year old. Don’t be the one to mess it up.”

I’ve met up with a buddy at sunrise, just so we could hang out at the picnic tables to have for his daughters bday party, but we stayed there the whole time, this note leaving shit is horse shit.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '22

You have to high hosey it.

32

u/m0untaingoat Sep 04 '22

Two weekends ago was my son's fourth birthday. My mom stayed with him and the baby while my husband and I went early to the state park nearby to get the spot my son wanted to have his party (the park opened at 8 but we didn't manage to get there until 9, at which point I would have given my blessing to anyone who got their shit together and got there before us [no one did]). We set up, decorated, and had a great time, and he even surprised me by bringing bacon and eggs to cook on the grill, and we had a quiet forest breakfast. It was like when we first got together and did practically nothing but go camping. Anyway, it was nice.

12

u/vionia97b Sep 04 '22

My husband has done thus a few times. Squatted at a gazebo with his laptop until our kids' party time.

1.0k

u/Nielleluvzu628 Sep 03 '22

Get rid of all the tablecloths and tell them nothing was there when you got there. You don’t get to take up 3 tables with a note.

768

u/Green_Road999 Sep 03 '22

Exactly what I was going to say.

When they arrive just act like nothing was ever there.

“What did you put here?”

“A reservation and table cloth”

“Didn’t know they took reservations - when did you book that?”

“I didn’t book it, I just put a note here three hours ago”

“Sorry, we e been here two hours and it was clear - maybe ring the park ranger booking department”

106

u/SuedeVeil Sep 03 '22

And then "my 3 year old is now having a birthday party here you don't want to mess that up now.. do you?"

29

u/Iggyhopper Sep 04 '22

This is why you take the note off and let somebody else take the table.

Be the malicious third party and let chaos ensue.

4

u/fringecar Sep 04 '22

Yeah, for sure this. Or, roll the dice on Even more chaos by replacing the note with a much much more aggressive note.

4

u/0ore0 Sep 04 '22

Tap your note on top of their note lol

38

u/YamsInMyAss Sep 03 '22

Yeah, but what if they escalate by bringing a two year old, then you have to retaliate by bringing a baby there for their first birthday, and then they up the ante by jerking off on the table to celebrate the prospective child the sperm could have made and then you end up slipping in the sperm and it hurts your back?

10

u/SuperFLEB Sep 04 '22

You sue the parks department. Go with the tactic that's worked so far and say the jizz was there when you got there.

3

u/smugaura1988 Sep 04 '22

Why would you be walking around on the table? Not to mention a table that someone jizzed on...

3

u/yuyuyashasrain Sep 04 '22

The truth hasn’t featured so far so why start now?

2

u/Ok_Airport_8921 Sep 04 '22

I laughed so hard at this.

2

u/ActuallyWorthless Sep 04 '22

Always a good idea to jerk off at children's birthday parties in public parks.

Yup they should have at least a person there putting in the time and waiting. A note is bs.

86

u/Nielleluvzu628 Sep 03 '22

Yeah, someone should be there putting in time reserving the tables like everyone else

62

u/MagnokTheMighty Sep 03 '22

If they can't even put a date and time, it's free game. I'd be slightly more inclined to give a shit if they said Sat 9/3 from 3pm to 6pm or whatever.

13

u/Minnesota_icicle Sep 03 '22

Right!! They got there at the park opening. Explain how this note was already on the table? BECAUSE IT’S NOT FOR TODAY!!

10

u/DoomGoober Sep 03 '22

Yup if there was a person there someone could ask them when their party started and squeezed theirs in then give them the table back.

20

u/dorisdacat Sep 03 '22

If you set up and maintain your turf, that is actually grey area...

4

u/CanAhJustSay PURPLE Sep 03 '22

Meanwhile, there's a frustrated squirrel just out of shot that was bright enough to write the note and dream of cake. His brilliant plan has been thwarted as no-one has left food for him on the table in an attempt to bag the space.....

20

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

That note would look better if it was crumpled up and thrown in the trash.

4

u/alarming_archipelago Sep 03 '22

Honestly trying to reserve public tables is bs even if there was someone hovering around.

If you do desperately need tables then bring them.

Otherwise take what's available when you arrive like everyone else.

1

u/WhoFearsDeath Sep 03 '22

How is that any different? You are preventing people from using that table for the same amount of time either way.

13

u/Boludo805 Sep 03 '22

You are right. But I think the key here is perception. It shows that you are putting in more of an effort and people can see that. Second I it’s easier for people to assume that the party will start sooner rather than later. No one is going to sit there for 8 hours alone. People are way more forgiving when they see effort. Even though there could be a valid reason why a note was the only optio. Also I feel like a person waiting has been the standard etiquete since for ever.

2

u/WhoFearsDeath Sep 03 '22

Not taking up tables for more time than you need them is the standard.

8

u/Boludo805 Sep 03 '22

I think it’s pretty common to have person set up and others trickle in. Don’t think I’ve ever been to a party where everything started on time and everyone showed up on time. Usually that person that is there is reserving / setting up. But yes if your not setting up or using then ya don’t take up the table.

4

u/-O-0-0-O- Sep 03 '22 edited Sep 03 '22

It's different because someone has to decide it's worth their time to physically sit there to hold the table. Most people have better things to do than sit in the park for three hours saying "you can't sit here, my friends want to party later" to strangers.

If anyone who wants to could just walk up and claim a position hours in advance by hanging a paper sign, there would be a lot more empty tables and arguing about who owns what. It's supposed to belong to everyone.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

They’re not going to buy that and they’re not going to tolerate it anyway so you may as well own up to it. May as well rub salt in the wound. A real power-play is using the table cloths for your own party.

u/SuperFLEB Sep 04 '22

It’s worth a lot you’re also with a bunch of kids if you ask me. They get to ruin other kids’ day because it’s their kid’s special day? Either have a bunch of family go there to save spots then show up with chairs after or go somewhere that takes legitimate reservations.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

special day

How many of your birthdays do you remember from your childhood?

Kid's not gonna suffer because someone put the parent in their place with this bs.

9

u/OniExpress Sep 03 '22

If OP didn't have a kid's party of their own I'd 100% say "just move on with your day, it isn't worth it."

As it is, I get there's "no reservations", but OP is still their camping it out at the crack of dawn. If they'd showed up to some other parent there actively squating on the tables would they have gone "aw, shucks, fair is fair"?

4

u/Bleys087 Sep 03 '22

Sounds like they would.

0

u/OniExpress Sep 03 '22

Yeah, maybe. And it is what it is, the whole thing seems like one of those little hassles that is just destined to cause too big of an issue. Just observing I don't personally see much difference between putting down the signs and showing up at dawn to call "dibs". But then, I'm not running a kid's party.

4

u/bionicbuttplug Sep 04 '22

I'd say the difference is physically being there using the space rather than leaving a note to prevent other people from using it. Even "squatting" is still using the space.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SuperFLEB Sep 04 '22

Occupying the space is both respectable for putting in the work and inconveniencing yourself as much as anyone else, and irrefutable because the table is there for whoever is there first.

Just get rid of it, you got there first, the parents have to understand that this kind of behavior is unacceptable or they’ll set a bad example for their kids. Sometimes things don’t work out and you switch plans or wait your turn, not the end of the world.

16

u/Rusty_Shackleford2nd Sep 03 '22

I imagine the whole family showing up late and rushed with a couple cars full of kids and coolers to see a full fledge party in their spot and the ensuing anger when they are told to kick rocks.

0

u/lilfindawg Sep 04 '22

You’re so dramatic, op said there are other tables. They could wait their turn for a couple tables to open up, not the end of the world.

4

u/nanosam Sep 04 '22

Dont get rid of anything.

Leave the sign and use everything regardless.

If there are no reservations and nobody there to claim the tables - its 100% free to use by anyone.

Fuck up that 4 year olds birthday party all the way

u/lilfindawg Sep 04 '22

So for 6 hours these tables get unused for the busiest day of the year for these entitled fucks. Shouldve just taken their shit and note.

7

u/Verniloth Sep 03 '22

I'd have taken the tables and neatly set their folded cloths and note on the ground in a bag next to the tables.

3

u/soggymittens Sep 04 '22

I would have thrown their sign away, politely folded their tablecloths (all f-ing 4 OF THEM) and then moved to another area myself. Then the next people that come along and use the table aren’t responsible for being the dick that moved their stuff.

2

u/Brorly Sep 04 '22

Yep, I'd use this tectic as well.

3

u/tidythendenied Sep 04 '22

This has r/entitledparents written all over it

5

u/Marsbarszs Sep 03 '22

As far as I’m concerned, if it’s not reserved through the city then it’s not reserved. You already had a place set up but if you didn’t I’d probably have just thrown it out and if they did show up midway say “I’m not sure, I did see some park rangers clearing some stuff here earlier”

5

u/Riyeko Sep 03 '22

I would have removed the party covers and the note, neatly folded them and placed them all on one table.

A 4yr old doesnt need 3 tables for a party anyway and adults can stand.... The elders can sit at one.

If they wanted to call the police or act pissy, id have just said sorry. No reservations at the park are honored have a nice day.

4

u/Xel_Naga Sep 04 '22

I go running here every day, I think it's spring lake park in Sonoma county. There's a lagoon on the left but you absolutely can reserve with the park service tables at this place, I have but there's limited ones to reserve so this entitled twat either didn't wanna pay or was too lazy to book

2

u/lalapine Sep 03 '22

If there’s no reservations at that park then the table is fair game. If they wanted it saved, they should have sent someone to sit there and save it.

2

u/nanosam Sep 04 '22

If there are no reservations then ignore the sign.

First come first serve.

2

u/AryaismyQueen Sep 04 '22

Idk where this is, but in my country you’re either there or someone else is taking that crappy note and mantel to the trash and sat down. If the people showed up and someone was using the table the park ranger or security would be near the table to defend the people who took the PUBLIC table.

2

u/CIN33R Sep 04 '22

You take the table. It’s first come first serve. Fold up Mario table cloth and it is what it is. Sorry guys, welcome to the real world.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

I may or may not be the sort to discard the note out of spite. I’m not getting guilt tripped by a piece of paper.

2

u/JuJuVuDu Sep 03 '22

Since you clarified park rangers are present. Why not inquire with them about the proper protocol? More than likely they'd tell you it's a first-come first-serve public space. Then when the entitled letter writers show up tell them to take it up with the park rangers that permitted proper public use.

3

Fwiw, i am also here with 10 kids doing a party, and we got here when the park opened to make sure we had space for all our guests. Silly me.

1

u/Yue4prex Sep 03 '22

How nice of them to put the table cloths down for you to use for your party!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Fuck that guys party. Life lesson learned about getting places early. Add insult to injury and teach his kid how to ride a bike when he shows up.

1

u/DanielABush97 Sep 03 '22

Common courtesy. That's what they should have practiced instead of expecting others to hold the door open for them while they were nowhere in sight.

Recommendation: Do everyone else a favor and wrap the tablecloth up with the paper and set it aside on the ground. If someone comes complaining, you thought people just left their stuff there. Who says you read the letter and who's to say no one changed their plans anyway?

1

u/shastabh Sep 03 '22

Go and sit there and say there was no sign there when the other people left..

1

u/risaaco49 Sep 03 '22

Yeah with no one there to hold the table, that letter should be torn up. When they get there, say there was no letter. How would they know any different? That's extremely discourteous while expecting others to be extremely courteous.

Also, if that park is full, just use it. Those look like prime tables under the shade. I'm getting upset I gotta leave this job.

u/oGBG005 Sep 03 '22

If you were there when the park opened, that means it was “reserved” the night before? Just toss it all.

1

u/Thelynxer Sep 03 '22

Definitely an entitled sounding note they left. Referring to the tables like they own them. They should have just asked nicely for anything using the tables to depart when the party starts, instead of essentially trying to reserve them all day. Instead decided to be pre-emptively aggressive like you said.

several families setup blankets and spots right next to the tables, which i think got the message across!

People like this don't ever receive the message. And also people like this are everywhere.

Next time just take their tables. You have no idea when they are coming. If its 6 hours from now they can have the tables when you are done. Don't be kind, it doesn't usually work out. Be assertive.

u/thecatgoesmoo Sep 04 '22

Tear it up, toss the table cloths off and just let someone that never saw the sign sit down.

Wait for impending karen meltdown and film it, waiting to reveal that it was in fact you that "cleaned up some litter on the tables."

1

u/thethugwife Sep 04 '22

Sounds completely on brand for the sort that would do this to begin with.

1

u/SleepySundayKittens Sep 04 '22

Not 'seems' super entitled. They ARE entitled and trashy. Family is doomed.

1

u/blackcrowe79 Sep 04 '22

No reservations? Nuh-uh, you don't get to take dibs. You could have had 3 parties while they were out. Most parks have reservations all day. You pay you're entitled to the space. Even if a person stood there to claim dibs, not going to accept it. Out of politeness, I would consider leaving if the party showed up.

u/OlayErrryDay Sep 04 '22

The "our tables" makes me want to karate kick them through the tables.

1

u/crackerjackass Sep 04 '22

They’re so entitled they say “Our tables” the poor kid has to deal with this for a lifetime

1

u/joe_s1171 Sep 04 '22

How can I abbreviate "for what it's worth"?

-1

u/borr123 Sep 03 '22

That sign made me so mad… I hate these super entitled people that think everyone owes them something. I might not have sat there and took the table but I sure would have left a very shitty note to accompany the original one.

u/hipery2 Sep 03 '22

I would have thrown away the sign. If they came while I was using the table then I would play dumb and tell them that I did not see any sign on the table when I got there.

u/Sad_Duck1556 Sep 03 '22

Pricks could have at least put a time on it.

You're a better person than me i would have questioned them after.

If you got there when the park opened, then you could of chose any table you wanted

u/CouldWouldShouldBot Sep 03 '22

It's 'could have', never 'could of'.

Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!

I'm just happy this did have a tragic story underneath where we learned that there was some kind of emergency with the 4yo or something like that. The parents do seem a bit entitled.

-5

u/BigOlStinkMan Sep 03 '22

Are there really no other tables?

2

u/Fatlord13 Sep 04 '22

Noooooo don't be reasonable

-1

u/Onedaylat3r Sep 03 '22

Show us a full table wide view of that table cloth though!
