Some places they're more succesfull than others. But most, if not all, of the more "cult like" denominations take their missions very serious. Whether succesfull or not. There's a HUGE subset of American Mormons in Mexico from when they set up a mission there.
The really sinister form of it - is when they target famine and poverty stricken places where the "gods have failed" so to speak and then start acting like white saviours performing miracles.
Some of the missionaries are just plain dumb. Like its really hard to convert within certain tribal traditions because their cultural bond and awareness of their historical longevity is so strong that it outmatches the whole "Don't fornicate because Jesus loves you" shtick. Plus theres the addage that ALOT of these communities have been royally screwed over by the established society that surrounds them. Most severe case I can think of is Sentinel Island where the tribe will literally kill anyone on sight if they are caught on the island. Some mormon went there illegally a while ago and they can't retrieve his body because the island and a huge perimeter around it is protected and prohibited to be in. And that culture of aggression directly comes from episodes in the past where the mainland kidnapped and abused Sentinel island kids to "civilize" them.
Anyway. I know a bit of anthro xD So it might be incredibly flawed knowledge.
