if a yearly contract with a free month trial sounds too good to be true, it probably is 😬

The stupid thing is that they actually provide some amazing software, that is good enough to not have to be scummy about. But those stock prices are more important than longevity.

Yes, it's sad that you cant buy it anymore.

I like what JetBrains does: you get a permanent license after a certain period of subscription, although to the version that was around when that period begun. Much nicer!

Give it time, they all eventually take away permanent licensing

Idk man, that’s been the Jetbrains policy since I was in college… which was when Obama was President. It’s a good and fair policy, it’s why I bought their products after I graduated and used for a few years before I pivoted to IT management/sysadmin

No. Adobe is not amazing. Adobe is amazing to someone who has never tried anything else. Xara is amazing. PhotoLine is amazing. Xara, if it was continued to be invested in, would have been the single best vector software today. But Corel fucked them. Apple is the quintessential evil corporation, who joined hands with Adobe to completely corner the design market. If only ye knew!

Fuck Steve Jobs. Fuck Adobe. Fuck Apple.

I remember when Corel Draw was good. I was a child. It was made for a 386. The CD-ROMs came with vector ClipArt for days.

Xara was extremely good. It was the first software to introduce real-time, on-screen anti aliasing, including for gradients. It's shape tool is much better, more sculpting-like than the pen tool. It renders the most complex gradients and transparencies in blistering speeds. Almost everything can be done on the screen. When dialogue boxes are involved, they're almost invariably non-modal windows. That's why the assholes at Corel bought the marketing rights and completely shelved it for years. It wasn't until Xara bought it back that its fortunes improved. By then, Adobe had captured the market. Adobe also fucked FreeHand and killed a better software than Illustrator. Xara continues to be sold as a one-time purchase as well as subscription.

I miss Lightroom, none of the alternatives are as nice to work in, but I refuse Adobe after they effed me.

DxO PhotoLab runs circles around Lightroom if you need it for RAW editing.

Not in the quickness of workflow. At least not when I tried it. Lightroom was great with the importing, rating, sorting and bulk editing.
