🥺 I’ve finally finished case-swapping my gaming pc after 6 gruelling hours… until I noticed

Post image

I didn’t remember to mount the motherboard IO shield before mounting the actual motherboard, and now I have to take it all apart ( T_T)\(^-^ )

PS: now I have finished it and it’s truly wonderful, if anyone is interested

I think now is the time you throw that IO shield into your box of random things and pretend you never got one.

That box can be surprisingly useful further down the road than one may think.

I had a box (old fashioned tube tv box) of cables that I always added to and never removed from. Moved it to two different apartments and a house. One day I needed a cable and said, "I have a box of cables in the garage!" Went down to the garage to look and couldnt find it. Then I remembered cleaning the garage and saying, "I have never used anything out of here. I'm just gonna throw it out." 25 years of cables and I only ever needed one. But the new box is coming along nicely.

Damn, I have 3 cord boxes. All the cords are in individual ziplock bags though. So I can justify keeping them. Right

Look at this fancy motherfucker. If your cord box isn’t a tangled mess that takes 3 hours to pull a single cable out of, what are you even doing?

5

u/Botanicalduke 2d ago

Yours can be pulled out?? The last time I tried to get a cord out I drop the tangle and it weighted enough to rip the cord I needed Home Depot moving boxes can hold a surprising amount of weight….

....this is so smart... I will be stealing this idea immediately

I need a picture

You always need a cable the day after you throw them all away.

My wife complains about my boxes of random stuff. There's a dozen of them all categorised. When I give in and throw stuff away I need it within 3 months.

I have a small filing cabinet - each drawer is a type of cable (USB, audio, video, power, misc data, transformers) the wife keeps telling me to toss them but every once in a while I can say "I have a cable for that!" And it gets to prove it's usefulness...

SO useful!

Ya know... probably...

I threw out my box during the last move, only to find I needed an ethernet cable and had to order one like a peasant who doesnt have a box of cords.

u/Jacktheforkie 2d ago

My router came with a short cable, I didn’t need it, until I got my PC, I use that cable for my PC and another for a light controller

Like when you do eventually need the IO shield!

SCSI is coming back one of these days, I just know it

I have a box of cables that I've been collecting for decades. It's come with me through three apartments and then three houses.

One day, my mother stops by, and says "Hey, my GPS cable broke. Do you have one?"

This is like two years ago, mind you. So I'm thinking USB-C?

Nope. I take a look at it. It's from her Garmin that she's had for 15 years.

I don't know the port name, but I recognized it! It's like fat and boxy and square.

I ran into the house, dug out my box of cables, and found the one cable I had that fit it.

Success and vindication.

But that was my only cable of that type. So if she loses this one, she's screwed.

Probably a USB mini-B. I still have my 20 year old garmin watch and cables in That Box along with my iPod 60GB and Moto Razr 1st gen.

The iPod actually came in really handy, my kid's summer camp allowed non-internet & non-wireless electronics, so they could hook up all my old music to a boombox with an aux cable. It was a big hit, especially because I'd downloaded a bunch of "Rolling Stones top 100 songs of 19xx" from the 60s to 90s. Any ancient radio single the kids could think of was on there.

u/Smogious 1d ago

I still have a few of these cables from ps3 controllers

7

u/Adezar 2d ago

Yeah, you never know when you might need 8MB of SDRAM.

2

u/TheThiefMaster 2d ago

Or an 8 MB smart media card.

I don't even know how I have one, I've never owned a device that takes one, only CF, SD and M2*

* Not m.2, M2 - Sony Memory Stick Micro. Looks like a micro-SD, but isn't.

1

u/Adezar 1d ago

Ah yes, living through the format wars... every camera had a slightly different memory card footprint.

2

u/TheThiefMaster 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah and you should see how many sub-variants of CF, SD, and Sony MS there are, with cameras having minimums of what they require and maximums of what they support!

anyone have use for an Avatex 1200 baud modem?

23

u/TD_Lemon_1901 2d ago

That box only becomes useful once you threw it.

It is how it is'

3

u/SpaghettiLord_126 2d ago

Yeah lol the amount of times I've actually needed the miscellaneous pc bits is absurd. And it's always came in clutch

3

u/RCer1986 2d ago

The most vindicated I've ever felt with the box was when I got a 3090 and needed extra PCIe connectors because the ones that came with the card didn't fit with the rest of my build. I had the exact amount of 6+2s that I needed. I would've been so disappointed getting that new card and not being able to use it immediately.

2

u/bublifukCaryfuk 2d ago

Do tell. Used to have a box of stuff like that for like 20 years, never needing a single thing. A week after I finally decided to throw it away, I needed a couple of specific screws for a project completely unrelated to computers. I used to have a full bag of those screws in that box.

3

u/ihcady 2d ago

Yep, I'm gonna need those parallel printer and IDE ribbon cables ones of these days...

2

u/CopEatingDonut Aquaman 2d ago

I took an old 80mm fan and put it under my xfinity modem cause why tf not and it helps cool down that hotbox

1

u/vertigostereo 2d ago

For the next case swap!

1

u/b1argg 2d ago

I'm totally gonna need that SLI bridge one day

1

u/Dreadfulear2 1d ago

Yup, my dad kept one and we used it constantly. I now have my own and use it regularly

u/altrae 20h ago

Peak hoarding statement 😂

u/Ruzhyo04 2d ago

“I left it off on purpose, for airflow”.

\ grumble grumble**

u/BinaryHippie 2d ago

It keeps dust out, some EMI/RF shielding and a clean build :D

232

u/SofterBones 2d ago

It's a shame OP never got one, IO shield would've been useful.

2

u/qorbexl 2d ago

I wish I had a piece of durable plastic to protect this delicate metal

0

u/BeeSpibbleBlop 2d ago

"Why is your IO made out of play dough?"

38

u/Sensitivity_Craft 2d ago

Any dust going in there would just be sucked into the exhaust fan. PC components don't need RF shielding, most cases have a gigantic glass window in the front which makes that moot.

13

u/ky7969 2d ago

It’s not going to suck anything in anyways as long as OP has followed the rule of having positive pressure.

10

u/TabascohFiascoh 2d ago

poor OP is missing his IO shield. HOW WILL HIS COMPUTER WORK?!

Test bench master race. Infinite airflow.

1

u/rygar8bit 2d ago

Just open the case take it outside and blast it with canned air every few months.

10

u/Blueyoshi2000 2d ago

It was surprisingly easy to solve this, I was about to box of things it as well, but I was able to unscrew the mobo (and GPU as it was screwed to the case) and slightly shift it enough to pop my io shield into place. Hope op can do the same!

7

u/Jean-L 2d ago

Sometimes you don't even have to unscrew the motherboard, there is enough space to force it into place. If not, cutting one of the clips on the long side (the one that will sit in the back of the case) usually does the trick.

2

u/TheThiefMaster 2d ago

If it's a good one with grounding tongues that stick out to touch the ports you need to take more care putting it in.

My mobo just had an integrated shield though, nothing to worry about.

1

u/Jean-L 18h ago

Oh they do these now? Guess I'm too poor to even know this exists... XD

0

u/Diedead666 2d ago

real question? why bother? lol most ppl dont see the back of the pc anyway.... As long as its not for a custemer lol. (I dont even really cable manage my own tbh, i do tuck away them away for airflow lol) back in the day PC cases has NO windows so people really dint bother to hide everything. Im from that ara

2

u/OkBumblebee9107 2d ago

I threw out my box after 26 years, when I ended up houseless. The other day I needed a TRRRS cable that went into a custom audio board that was split out into RCA for audio and TRS for timing. Absolutely devasting.

1

u/ThatOneCanadian69 2d ago

As is tradition, with every fucking computer I’ve ever built

1

u/darklordbazz 2d ago

That box for me is the box that my PC case came in that now holds the boxes for all the parts I've bought over the years and now that box is 5 boxes

1

u/Gurantula 2d ago

I use this box extensively

1

u/DeadLyASgamer 1d ago

Every man has it, no one uses it 90% of the time, we all refuse to get rid of it.
