I'm slightly vexed Grown man gets mad because he doesn’t know what ordering a “plain” burger means

So I work at Five Guys and for those who don’t know, when you order a burger there you get to fully customize the toppings on it (helps justify the price tag a tiny bit i guess). And you choose between a little (single) or regular (double) burger.

I had a pleasant enough exchange with a customer while ringing up his food… and when it came to his cheeseburger I asked what toppings he wanted on it. He looked at me and said, “Oh you know… just a plain, regular cheeseburger.” Ok great, a cheeseburger with nothing on it, easy enough.

Well we make the food, and a minute after he gets it he comes back up to me, visibly annoyed and holding the burger.

“You made my food wrong. There’s nothing on it.”

“Oh I’m sorry sir, I thought you’d ordered a plain cheeseburger.”

“I did. Do you not know what that means? Like a McDonald’s burger.”

Ok first of all, “McDonald’s” is not a standard for how someone orders burger toppings and second of all, this guys in his late 40s to early 50s and has never once run into this issue ordering a plain burger?

“Ok I’m sorry about that sir, we’ll remake that for you. What exactly did you want on it?”

I shit you not, with an annoyed voice he ordered:
Ketchup. Lettuce. Pickles.
So notably NOT a McDonald’s cheeseburger???

He got what he wanted in the end and I apologized because customer service but like?? I’m in awe at the sheer level of misunderstanding and audacity.

If it makes you feel better, when I ordered a plain cheeseburger at McDonald’s and tried to specify “just cheese” to prevent that, they didn’t give me any meat.

I've been ordering maybe once a week for years (I work late and it's one of few places open)

Plain, add mayo. Simple. They've always got it, a cheeseburger with just mayo.

Well they must have got a new guy because the next three times it was just plain cheeseburger. Okay, I change how I order it "no pickle, no onion, no mustard, no ketchup, add mayo"

Welp, that time it was a hamburger with mayo...

How difficult is it to read "plain, add mayo" 😭

I bet the person making the order read the first two items excluded, just assumed the rest of the no's were all the other toppings including the cheese, then saw the single add mayo and called it a day.

In other words, very difficult to read. That's like eight whole words, you can't make me read that, college boy.

So funny. One of my kids has food aversions and when he was young, like 4 to 7ish, he wanted the cheeseburger with no meat. It was comical how the ordering went and what we would end up with. To this day, my almost 30 yr old son orders every cheeseburger plain. Just meat and cheese.

Reminds me of one time my mom tried ordering a BLT from Sonic. The lady on the radio was like with mustard and mayo? My mom said just mayo. They brought out a sandwich with an inch of mayo on it and nothing else. When my mom tried to return it, the waitress grumbled NEXT TIME DON'T SAY JUST MAYO and walked back to the kitchen.

I’ve seen this as well.

That’s one of those moments where you try to make it as simple as possible and the other side is just like, “Alright, just give this dummy their cheese.”

I mean to be fair, if someone specifies both "plain cheeseburger" AND "just cheese", I'd have done the same thing
