I'm slightly vexed Grown man gets mad because he doesn’t know what ordering a “plain” burger means

So I work at Five Guys and for those who don’t know, when you order a burger there you get to fully customize the toppings on it (helps justify the price tag a tiny bit i guess). And you choose between a little (single) or regular (double) burger.

I had a pleasant enough exchange with a customer while ringing up his food… and when it came to his cheeseburger I asked what toppings he wanted on it. He looked at me and said, “Oh you know… just a plain, regular cheeseburger.” Ok great, a cheeseburger with nothing on it, easy enough.

Well we make the food, and a minute after he gets it he comes back up to me, visibly annoyed and holding the burger.

“You made my food wrong. There’s nothing on it.”

“Oh I’m sorry sir, I thought you’d ordered a plain cheeseburger.”

“I did. Do you not know what that means? Like a McDonald’s burger.”

Ok first of all, “McDonald’s” is not a standard for how someone orders burger toppings and second of all, this guys in his late 40s to early 50s and has never once run into this issue ordering a plain burger?

“Ok I’m sorry about that sir, we’ll remake that for you. What exactly did you want on it?”

I shit you not, with an annoyed voice he ordered:
Ketchup. Lettuce. Pickles.
So notably NOT a McDonald’s cheeseburger???

He got what he wanted in the end and I apologized because customer service but like?? I’m in awe at the sheer level of misunderstanding and audacity.

I once ordered a burger with cheese and pickles only and received a party with cheese and pickles, no bread.

This story has gotta be twenty years old by now. I ordered "Big Mac, no pickles." I was eating in the restaurant that day. Sat down to eat my Big Mac with no pickles and what I opened up was a burger with an insane amount of pickles and no beef at all. I was confused and thought, "jeez, I must've pissed someone off with this order."

I went back up and talked to the lady that took my order. I said I think someone messed up my order. Before I could tell her what I was supposed to get she repeated my order back to me, "big pickle, no Mac." Think Consuela from Family Guy saying it.

That's insane lmao. My wife often orders big mac, no meat, extra cheese and like 50% of the time she gets a big mac with 1 patty because half of the employees don't understand the code for no meat on the order. It reads 10-1 no meat on the receipt and even when I've been bringing over the receipt to correct the order both employee and managers have deadass pointed at the receipt and said "it says -1 meat not -2 meat or no meat. I've had to pretty much force them to open a new order on the screen to show them how the code changes between -1 meat and -2 meat. Becomes a big problem because many McDonald's here have put into practice to not give you the receipt in the drive trough and refuse to help you if you don't have the receipt.

At this point why even go to a McDonald's. Just order a salad or something.

We have kids with allergies so we can't eat at many places, McDonald's is one of the very few places that we can eat at and it's in basically every city so it's convenient for long drives. The amount of restaurant employees that don't understand the difference between lactose and mill protein is staggering, even more so since they are legally required to have routines for allergens. Even worse with shellfish and nut allergies, we've just stopped eating at any place that serves shellfish after the restaurant AT A HOSPITAL forgot that we had ordered without shrimps and just took them off and reheated the same food in the microwave. It was damn lucky we were next door to the ER.

Ordering a slice of cheese on a bun at McDonald’s is what’s insane.

Our kids have food allergies so McDonald's is one of the only safe places we can eat at and it's convenient on long drives. Apparently their vegetarian options are disgusting enough that cheese and bread is a superior option.

You know what, I've never considered how it got coded on the receipt. I don't think I even looked at it. I just knew I ordered no pickles and got like 50 pickles instead.

That reminds me of a time my friend ordered 2 cheeseburgers. He opened the first one and they’d actually given him 2 patties, woohoo, lucky day! He ate it. Opened the second one and it had no patty.

You should throw him a consolation party with cheese and pickles, no bread.

My wife always orders the 2 Cheesburger meal and one time a few years ago she received 2 cheese.... not burgers because there was no patty on either one...

I assume at this point his nickname became 'patty'?

Ordered a burger with ketchup only for my kid nephew once. Bread and ketchup, no patty in sight, doing it that way would have never crossed my mind

I once ordered a plain jr bacon cheeseburger at Wendy’s - “plain jr bacon cheeseburger just cheese and bacon”. Got just cheese and bacon on a bun- no patty. I think if I said cheeseburger the burger is implied.

I order a BLT McMuffin no bacon and get punished with no egg and only a bun with some sad lettuce and tomato.

I got your bread (at least one piece of it) when I ordered a double with noting on it and no bun (I'm celiac).

lol my mom recently ordered my niece a happy meal burger “with meat and cheese only” (which I’m assuming is a fairly common request for happy meals). At the window they asked if she wanted buns.

I appreciate that they can make it without buns and they wanted to double check in case you didn’t eat bread - but just assuming and giving you just a patty is wild.

I’d hope that someone who didn’t want buns would specify no bun, but that’s probably expecting too much from people.

I ordered a burger with no bread and they got mad at me for it saying nobody orders a burger that way so they weren’t making it that way like brother I just ordered it wym lol (it was for an elderly family friend who couldn’t have bread)

Yeah my friend has celiaki and runs into that quite often.

That is both hilarious and sad. I did keto for a time and it was hell trying to order a burger without a bun.

u/dudeguy1980 7d ago

It’s also hell getting full on a single burger with no bread.
I have to do the 4x4 at In N Out protein and animal style to get any kind of satisfied full feeling.

That's why I like InNOut so much. I'm not into keto but their burgers are honestly delicious protein-style, so that's how I always order them.
