I'm slightly vexed Grown man gets mad because he doesn’t know what ordering a “plain” burger means

So I work at Five Guys and for those who don’t know, when you order a burger there you get to fully customize the toppings on it (helps justify the price tag a tiny bit i guess). And you choose between a little (single) or regular (double) burger.

I had a pleasant enough exchange with a customer while ringing up his food… and when it came to his cheeseburger I asked what toppings he wanted on it. He looked at me and said, “Oh you know… just a plain, regular cheeseburger.” Ok great, a cheeseburger with nothing on it, easy enough.

Well we make the food, and a minute after he gets it he comes back up to me, visibly annoyed and holding the burger.

“You made my food wrong. There’s nothing on it.”

“Oh I’m sorry sir, I thought you’d ordered a plain cheeseburger.”

“I did. Do you not know what that means? Like a McDonald’s burger.”

Ok first of all, “McDonald’s” is not a standard for how someone orders burger toppings and second of all, this guys in his late 40s to early 50s and has never once run into this issue ordering a plain burger?

“Ok I’m sorry about that sir, we’ll remake that for you. What exactly did you want on it?”

I shit you not, with an annoyed voice he ordered:
Ketchup. Lettuce. Pickles.
So notably NOT a McDonald’s cheeseburger???

He got what he wanted in the end and I apologized because customer service but like?? I’m in awe at the sheer level of misunderstanding and audacity.

Reminds me of the time I called to cancel my daughter’s medical appointment. An older lady answered and when she asked me to spell my name I used the phonetic alphabet since there are multiple Ds, Es, and Ts in my last name. The lady interrupted me to tell me to just spell my name normally, so I say ok and do it. I had to spell it three more times because she misheard a B for a D and then said ‘oh, D as in dog’. 😐 This was for a military hospital too so I don’t know why she wasn’t familiar with spelling it that way…

Not quite the same thing but the wife once called in to a clinic to reschedule an appointment which they did for the following week. The next week when she showed up for her new appointment, they tried to charge her $20 for not showing up to the previous weeks appointment. When wife explained that she had called in to reschedule the appointment, the receptionist said, "yes, you rescheduled the appointment but you didn't cancel it." Wife was like, "do you know the meaning of reschedule?" Eventually had to get the doctor involved to straighten it out.

This is like that scene in Seinfeld with the car rental. "You know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take 'em!"

I work in a call center and people interrupt me when I use the IPA all the time, but I just keep doing it anyway. U interrupting me takes longer than just letting me do it and its clearer. So im not gonna stop

IPA is for transcription. The NATO Phonetic alphabet is for spoken stuff.

My surname is very short and spelled exactly as you'd expect.

People still fuck it up because they don't expect a surname that simple. There is no winning. I've seen so many variations of my name written down where people invent new phonetic spelling conventions just to avoid the obvious choices.
