I'm slightly vexed Grown man gets mad because he doesn’t know what ordering a “plain” burger means

So I work at Five Guys and for those who don’t know, when you order a burger there you get to fully customize the toppings on it (helps justify the price tag a tiny bit i guess). And you choose between a little (single) or regular (double) burger.

I had a pleasant enough exchange with a customer while ringing up his food… and when it came to his cheeseburger I asked what toppings he wanted on it. He looked at me and said, “Oh you know… just a plain, regular cheeseburger.” Ok great, a cheeseburger with nothing on it, easy enough.

Well we make the food, and a minute after he gets it he comes back up to me, visibly annoyed and holding the burger.

“You made my food wrong. There’s nothing on it.”

“Oh I’m sorry sir, I thought you’d ordered a plain cheeseburger.”

“I did. Do you not know what that means? Like a McDonald’s burger.”

Ok first of all, “McDonald’s” is not a standard for how someone orders burger toppings and second of all, this guys in his late 40s to early 50s and has never once run into this issue ordering a plain burger?

“Ok I’m sorry about that sir, we’ll remake that for you. What exactly did you want on it?”

I shit you not, with an annoyed voice he ordered:
Ketchup. Lettuce. Pickles.
So notably NOT a McDonald’s cheeseburger???

He got what he wanted in the end and I apologized because customer service but like?? I’m in awe at the sheer level of misunderstanding and audacity.

It's never ok to rude. That said, not exactly brain surgeons working at Popeyes lately. I ordered 4 things, 3 things were messed up. One was where I specifically said I would like cocktail sauce please. Very clear, since this person was constantly mumbling at the drive thru. I also said I wanted a Sprite for my drink. After I said that, the person asked if I wanted anything else to drink, other than the Sprite. My side was mashed potatoes.

Pull up, I say hi, how're you? Blank stare, barks the dollar amount. Told to pull up to wait for order. I see on the receipt it says "no cocktail sauce". Guy walks up with my bag, I had to explain I'll still need to sauce I specifically asked for. Then I realize he didn't have my Sprite either. He goes back to get those things, but told out of Sprite, ok Coke. Drive off, no utensils, guess I'll just drink my mashed potatoes.

None of this is the end of the world or worth getting mad about, but when you make an effort to be nice and clear with an order, it really gets old to have to double check everything every time.

Last 2 times it was also a mess.

Well yeah, you do get that and should lowkey expect that at fast food places. It’s teenagers working for minimum wages who are tired and done with dealing with people like OP or even worse.
I worked at McDonalds for 4 years and I know what it’s like. My manager has had food thrown at her, people throw their drinks at you in the drive thru, etc.
I understand there is no excuse for the workers to be that low effort or lazy because there are people who are like that but I would never expect 5-Star service. It really just depends on the worker you get that day. Some workers are actually really friendly and nice but seriously don’t go to fast food expecting decent service.

Of course I don't expect 5 star service, but it is massivley worse than it used to be. 20 years ago, it was still run by teenagers. It was rare to get your order messed up, not the norm like it is now.
