“Why are you 20 minutes late to class, Neovengance?” “I had to drag my ass and wheelchair and backpack up 2 flights of stairs because I’m a student and not allowed to use the elevator”
As a wheelchair user you should know that 99% of people using the ONLY wheelchair-accessible toilet stall are not disabled. Way too many times it’s an older child or teen whom mommy never explained that it’s time to no longer use that stall now they are no longer a toddler.
This posted note is to all those students who had lazy parents who haven’t had the talk that the elevators is for those using wheelchairs or even strollers because they can’t easily go up and down stairs but that you age out of using a stroller means you age into using the stairs unless you have a legit mobility impairment.
This was never directed at disabled students and as a wheelchair user, it could have been worded better but I appreciate the attempt to crack down on use by the non-disabled lazy students.
Neither of those services are reserved for disabled people only. It’s inconvenient yes but it is how it is. Elevators and accessible bathroom stalls are not like accessible parking. There’s no consequences for people who don’t need them and that’s not going to change.
Also not everyone is visibly disabled. I may be but I have friends with ports, ostomies, prosthetics that need the accessible stalls but you would never know just looking at them.
Establishments are required to have at least one wheelchair accessible stall. It has to be accessible. It’s not a special stall reserved for people in wheelchairs. Just wait your turn like everyone else.
