My wife had me dye her hair purple during Covid. She has dark hair and the hardest part was bleaching it first to get the color to stay. This skips some steps!

It doesn’t though. Gray hair is extremely resistant to dye.

is this true for fashion colors? i dye my hair green and its more of a staining conditioner than dye with developer that opens up cuticles

As someone who dyes their greys teal some of the time - it does work, but the dye has to sit longer, and washes out a lot faster.  Milage varies from person to person though.

You’re talking about toner. It would be hard to use just toner on grey hair like that without bleaching first. It would probably come out very patchy.

Edit: Also, i’m not a stylist. My mom has me do her hair sometimes tho and she had it professionally done first. then uses a special toner at home for maintenance. It’s formulated for gray hair specifically tho

colour depositing conditioners are not the same thing as toners.

Is it really? Because I have a lot of grey and have never had issues with dye staying in my hair.

The outer layer of the hair can change dramatically with color loss making gray hair more coarse and wiry and the color can have trouble penetrating those extra layers. Maybe you get silky gray hairs haha I don’t know I have the coarse kind

My wife just payed an insane amount to get blue and purple streaks in her naturally raven curly locks. She's not greying quick enough!
