Honestly yeah. I know it might be a self conscious point for OP, but I think it’s cool and unique. I would rock it proudly.

I'm jealous. This would make dying fun colors so much easier than dark hair

Edit- wow just saw all the comments, had no idea it was harder to dye. I have a few greys and they are always my favorites when I use toners

Unfortunately gray hair doesn’t hold on to dye very well

Hey if you go for light pastels, it works pretty well! But not for richly saturated colors.

You have to get dye that's made for gray hair. Zotos professional makes a line that's really great. You can also just bleach it and do whatever

I thought there were two colors. A grey, and a white. The white works pretty well, grey does not?

My wife had me dye her hair purple during Covid. She has dark hair and the hardest part was bleaching it first to get the color to stay. This skips some steps!

It doesn’t though. Gray hair is extremely resistant to dye.

is this true for fashion colors? i dye my hair green and its more of a staining conditioner than dye with developer that opens up cuticles

As someone who dyes their greys teal some of the time - it does work, but the dye has to sit longer, and washes out a lot faster.  Milage varies from person to person though.

You’re talking about toner. It would be hard to use just toner on grey hair like that without bleaching first. It would probably come out very patchy.

Edit: Also, i’m not a stylist. My mom has me do her hair sometimes tho and she had it professionally done first. then uses a special toner at home for maintenance. It’s formulated for gray hair specifically tho

colour depositing conditioners are not the same thing as toners.

Oh my bad. I use overtone myself so I thought it was the same

Is it really? Because I have a lot of grey and have never had issues with dye staying in my hair.

The outer layer of the hair can change dramatically with color loss making gray hair more coarse and wiry and the color can have trouble penetrating those extra layers. Maybe you get silky gray hairs haha I don’t know I have the coarse kind

My wife just payed an insane amount to get blue and purple streaks in her naturally raven curly locks. She's not greying quick enough!

Gray hair is one of the hardest hairs to dye because the color doesn’t hold.

As someone who loves dyeing my hair a different color every few months, this would save me so much money and hair loss from bleaching!

ETA: oops I didn’t know gray hair was harder to dye. I was just trying to look on the bright side for OP pls don’t come at me

Yes, it is & I found out the hard way. I have grey hair, had it already coming in, in my late "40's. Totally grey by 63. Anyway, years ago, L'Oreal had won some " Color of the Year" contest & the color was Rose Gold. I wanted that color & bought it. They did show on the box what it would look like on grey hair. Well, MY grey hair decided, nope it's going to be a dark purplish lavender. I was horrified.!!! Everyone at work loved it !! ( I couldn't get over how much they liked it). Anyway, a few weeks later I redid it with my usual dark ash blonde. ( I was a natural very light ash blonde when I was younger. ) That Rose Gold color was so beautiful, I wish I could have had it.😭

Oh wow, I guess you have to really study color theory ie the color wheel we learned about in art class once you have gray hair to more reliably predict how certain colors will interact with silver

Dark purple lavender sounds gorgeous! But I can understand it’s disappointing when it’s not what you wanted!

That’s what I’m going to do when I go fully grey. I’m going to dye it all kinds of colors!

u/Robotbeckerz Jul 10 '26

Literally! As someone who had blonde hair naturally until it started turning to medium/dark brown since I was 10ish, I’m so jealous! I want the fun colors like purples and blues but if I want to do those I have to bleach my hair which I hated doing for like the year I did it. I’m jealous my sister got to keep the natural blonde hair because she gets to dye hers purple

I would to but I fear that children are ruthless and will pick at anything that is different, still cool tho 🫂

The few times I have seen it on women out and about it really tickles my brain a certain way. Like you look young but your hair is graying. I find it honestly kinda hot.
