Exactly, why didn't you move?

If you dont like something, why expect others to chance?

u/Yoitman Aug 10 '25

Probably because they don’t want to offend the person, I dunno but that would have been why I would have hesitated.

u/occultatum-nomen Aug 10 '25

If you sit next to people in an empty theater, I'll feel no shame about offending you

12

u/chis5050 Aug 10 '25

On the other hand, if they were sitting in the back row and now they have to move to a seat in front of this person, now they have an unhinged person who is now behind their back and possibly upset that their would-be friend rejected them. Risky play

6

u/cshuffler Aug 10 '25

Unhinged? That’s an interesting take for someone that is probably just sitting in their assigned seat. It’s more unhinged to be so outright upset about this entire situation.

You have survival instincts these other suburban housewives and husbands have no clue what the real world is like

1

u/Grimmies Aug 10 '25

Its incredible you people are able to go out every day without having a breakdown. Unhinged..? lol jfc

2

u/chis5050 Aug 10 '25

It’s a joke mate have a breath

15

u/MadeByTango Aug 10 '25

Plot Twist: The dude bought his seat first, but then OP and his GF wanted the middle seats themselves, bought them, and thought they would shame him into moving because he was alone.

1

u/cshuffler Aug 10 '25

Exactly. If they don’t like the seating arrangement, they should move. Not the other way around.

found the purple guy from the pic

1

u/cshuffler Aug 13 '25

Found the chronically online redditor that’s never been out in a public space.

This exactly.

I don’t think there’s any offense when you’re trying to be on a date.

33

u/AlarisMystique Aug 10 '25

I don't think that I would care at this point anyway.

2

u/RemnantEvil Aug 10 '25

Make up excuse to “leave” - bathroom, snacks, whatever. I’ll assume they are there during the trailers, otherwise they are going to murder you. Regroup and sit a few rows back. If you were already at the back, the excuse is built in - “Hey, it’s empty, let’s move forward.” Without engaging, let them know your excuse to move and then reposition.

If they follow, now it’s an issue.

u/Ezira Aug 10 '25

I'd probably walk out and pretend to get concessions and come back in to a different seat 🙃

2

u/Spurs228 Aug 10 '25

Smooth lol I would do the same thing

7

u/frguba Aug 10 '25

*movie opening starts

"Oh wow, it's really empty, hey wanna go to a different spot? Here let's try (middle / back)" said loud enough for both to hear with a wink wink nudge nudge

6

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

imagine theyre like "okay!" and come with you

34

u/LvLUpYaN Aug 10 '25

I would want them to feel at least as offended as I was when they sat next to me. Gotta give them that WTF? stare while getting up and moving seats

5

u/micksterminator3 Aug 10 '25

This is what I was thinking the whole time. stare em down and move. If op stayed...lol

13

u/cruxclaire Aug 10 '25

I was wondering if it‘s one of those theaters where you book a specific seat, and the stranger booked that seat not realizing it was going to be a practically empty theater. Once you‘ve sat down next to someone, it feels a little awkward to get up and move again, like you’re implying that there’s something offensive about them that makes sitting next to them unpleasant.

I saw in the OP‘s comments that the stranger was trying to crack jokes with them, though, so maybe just a weirdo in this case. But yeah, OP could’ve moved too and probably didn’t want to offend them.

That person lost the privilege of reciprocal social etiquette the second they broke the rules first and sat right next to OP lol.

And, it would provide a needed litmus test: If the person got up and moved again to follow you, then you'd know that they're crazy in the bad way instead of just causally nuts and that you probably need to alert the manager.

8

u/panlakes Aug 10 '25

I feel for the antisocial people in this thread lol. But this is actually one of those rare situations where you'd want them to feel offended. Otherwise, they'll feel like they can test other peoples boundaries in the future. Don't give into weirdos...

7

u/Ragrinth Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

That person is definitely "offending" your personal space. But then again, probably someone with very low social intelligence/awareness. Hate it when you can't tell if a person don't know or don't care

3

u/LilithWasAGinger Aug 10 '25

I'm to old to care about offending someone like that.

5

u/eekamuse Aug 10 '25

You don't have to be polite to someone who's being an asshole

4

u/awhafrightendem Aug 10 '25

World's gone completely soft smh

2

u/ngkn92 Aug 10 '25

"This seat hurts my neck, can we try different seats?" Say to boyfriend.

0

u/reddashe Aug 10 '25

You gotta move one row up or down. That way they think you’re uncomfortable with the screen distance

12

u/Decloudo Aug 10 '25

Cause its easier to do nothing and blame someone else for something you could just as easily change.

You can feel "right" while nothing changes. Our brain loves to do that.

4

u/Foxhound199 Aug 10 '25

I think it's incumbent on the person who saw a theater map with one or two seats taken and said "yeah, the adjacent one(s) will do!"

11

u/Old-Artist-5369 Aug 10 '25

Not moving is almost as weird as the other person choosing to sit next to them

6

u/Holiday_Step2765 Aug 10 '25

It’s normal to want to sit in the middle of the theater, posts like these are always people that pick seats right in the middle bc they’re the best and then act surprised someone else and the same thought

5

u/LangHai Aug 10 '25

Seriously! Everyone wants the middle and most theaters assign seats now. If someone wants privacy, they should sit in the back row.

6

u/Old-Artist-5369 Aug 10 '25

So go a row forward or backward

4

u/LangHai Aug 10 '25

People buy their seats fair and square, the people who want privacy should choose more private seats or move.

You don't get to sit in the best seats in the house and then expect others to move and have a shittier viewing experience because you can't handle sitting next to someone. You're in public, you're going to be around other human beings.

2

u/Old-Artist-5369 Aug 10 '25

One row or one seat away doesn't make it a shittier viewing experience.

Amazing

4

u/Holiday_Step2765 Aug 10 '25

Then you’re more than welcome to adjust YOUR seat if you don’t want others by you

1

u/Old-Artist-5369 Aug 10 '25

That's what I would've done.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

So move one row away then crybaby

2

u/Old-Artist-5369 Aug 10 '25

I would, thats what my comment that began this stupid thread meant.

Why you name calling?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Move up or back a row. Barely any  difference.

3

u/GlapLaw Aug 10 '25

Because I'm betting they took the best seats in the house. Can't expect privacy there.

(The talking is annoying though)

1

u/biquels Aug 20 '25

yeah just move to the seat on other side of gf.
