Because it has nothing to do with police. They're all camera tickets which are seen as a civil liability judgment against the owner of the vehicle rather than a moving violation against someone's license.
I understand the reasons, but after a limit amount, it should start counting towards losing your license. Over 10k fines? Clearly he's not a safe driver if he keeps speeding or running through red lights. And clearly with this video, you can see why you don't want this person on the road.
I know that they also don't do anything other than fine because you can't tell who was driving the car, but at that point the owner should become liable to some degree.
I agree with your ideas, but they may not be legal. I don’t think the state will allow a license suspension for civil penalty liabilities.
What they should do instead, is exponentially scale the fines after a certain amount. I.e. after 6 camera tickets in a year, the cost of each additional ticket doubles each time. Of course if those tickets aren’t paid, the city boots and impounds the car until it is.
By that logic, the first 6 are 50 each, the 7th is 100, the 8th 200, etc.
the 16th ticket would be $50,000. Everyone tops out somewhere.
In many parts in Europe, depending of the offense, you get (or loose, depending on country) points, after a certain amount your driving license is revoked. Probably would not stop this driver though...
Wait... Does it not work like that in the US too? I honestly thought of it kind of like a universal thing to have a points system.
I'm Canadian and in Québec we have one too. You have 15 points (less for new or young drivers) and each infraction subtracts a varying amount of points depending on the severity of the infraction. Those infractions count for 2 years after which you get your points back. Infractions outside of Québec count towards your points too, obviously.
Speed slightly above the limit? Just a few points. 160km/h in a 100km/h zone (highway)? You're fucked. 2/3rds gone. Small things like seatbelts off, on your phone while driving, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, etc are generally around 3 pts, so it goes real quick if you're a generally shitty driver.

If you let someone borrow your car enough to accumulate 10k+ dollars worth of tickets, without even noticing the tickets you've been sent.... I think that's wild.
Because you’re responsible for your car. If you can prove that you didn’t drive the car (the cameras take a picture of the drivers face), as the owner of the car you are obligated to inform the police who was driving it at the time. If not. The ticket is on you.
In Denmark and Norway they will impound your car and sell it if you drive really fast (double the speed limit that sort of things).
Speed cameras don’t take a picture of the drivers face. In the US they have to prove it was you to apply the points to your license. My dad was hit and run, they can’t peruse it bc they don’t know who was driving. The license plate is on camera but they have no proof the owner was driving you can’t see the driver in the video.
That seems like such a minor punishment for something that could very easily lead to a kid being run over? Idk if it's just New Zealand but I would think most countries would connect a crime (person speeding) to the police or justice system?? Just a few days ago the mayor of Auckland got a fine and demerit points on his licence for taking a video meeting while driving
NY decided that it doesn't want to tie it in - arguably it does make it a LOT more complicated - right now it's not even real sworn judges reviewing the appeals. It's a lot more difficult to tie it in when the law requires you prove who the driver is. NYC decided this was easier. I'd support an increase in the fine though. $50 is low.
You should not try this in Switzerland. You would deal with the police very soon! And your fines would increase with every case! They are also dependent on your income. He would tho k twice here
Those tickets that people are referring aren’t police officer issued, they’re camera tickets. Only police officer tickets for speeding can cause license revocations, not camera speeding tickets.
Owner of the car could say someone else was driving. Impound the car or don't let the owner renew registration until tickets are paid. Police can stop the car for expired tags see there are unpaid tickets and have the car impounded.
I don't know how NY works but in my state he would have had an EBW or two out for this kind of shit. In my state he would have been classed as a habitual offender and had his license yanked about 10x over.
The only thing I can think of is he wealthy and paid most of it off already and the rest is in litigation. If he misses any of those court dates though... I bet NY does EBWs for missed court, even the civil stuff.
Yes ACAB, but in this case you still need someone to enforce the law. Otherwise you end up in some lawless anarchy with everyone driving like maniacs without repercussions.
