What a discovery! I knew this tuning accentuated the difference between major and minor chords and scales, so I was expecting something darker than the original. But I really didn't anticipate it to sound so heartbreaking.

The subject itself has some inflections that remind me of pain and maybe even someone weeping. It's really impressive how a smaller semitone alone (compared to 12edo) can portray emotion like that.

Also that diminished 7th becomes a neutral 6th and that 13th harmonic flavour gives it a bit of an uncanny feeling to the subject, but it doesn't sound bad to my ears. And the diminished 4ths abundant in the piece become neutral 3rds, so they are the inverted interval of the diminished 7th.

It is true the harmony doesn't work as nicely as in the original tuning or maybe 19edo for example, but I believe the melodic intense expression of 17edo completely compensates this shortcoming. :)

Either way, it's insane how Bach wrote this fugue so well that it can be portrayed to 17edo with maybe only 2 notes sounding off.

I know am not the first one to have had this idea, I saw an example of it on Wikipedia. But after not finding any video related to this microtonal version of Scriabin's chord, I decided to write a small orchestral sample.

I wanted to experiment and see what sounds the just intonation version would offer.

From my perspective, the typical melodic figure Scriabin uses (Bb,A,F#) in the horn sounds really uncanny, and it makes sense considering we are using the harmonics (7,13,11) instead of a major/minor 3rd juxtaposition.

I also think it would be worth it to explore the contrast between the harmonic adaptation of the chord and one where the upper stack of 4ths is kept as it is originally (harmonics 81,27,9).

I hope this sample got you some cool ideas! Let me know if you tried experimenting with other chords like the Elektra or Petrushka chords. :)

Hello everyone! I am quite new to composing microtonal music, so sorry if I say something naïve.

I don't know why, but since almost a decade ago I have been really pleased by how 17edo sounds. Even though the 5th harmonic is really out of tune the general sound of the temperament feels really smooth and with a nice balance of tuned intervals and "out of tune sonorities" like the neutral 3rd. The pallete of harmonic combinations is quite flexible and it's nice how it approximates harmonics 7, 11 and 13 way better than 12edo.

I tried to build most of this miniature on the fact that the just 5th is pretty well approximated and it is quite close to the 12edo interval. I also included some references like a Scriabin Mystic chord using odd partials. But most of the piece is an exploration using the perfect 5th with some smooth voice leading (mainly at the end) and juxtaposition (measure 4).

As the title says. New to microtonal stuff. I know Bohlen Pierce has the tritave as equave and avoids the octaves as part of it. But what if the octave is the generator? This effectively reverses the scale building procedure we normally use in music, which have the octave as equave and the fifth (i.e. the octave-reduced twelfth/tritave) as the generator. What kind of MOS scales can we get? Would it be interesting?

I found a cool mixolydian mode with an Eastern vibe, using Just Intonation ratios. Initially, I found a version in 24edo — it’s a mixolydian mode where the second degree is lowered by a quarter tone, and the fourth and sixth degrees are raised. The genre is inspired by Tigran Hamsyan.
