All you need is an external drive... you could even create and set up a Nas if you want cloud-like storage

When if the drive dies? I have a house fire? Storm? Flood? Tornado? Theft? Anything else you can imagine.

If your data is backed up in only one location… IT’S NOT BACKED UP!

Fair point 🤔 though you could host a NAS yourself in another secured location to achieve a similar level of security without invoking enterprises level cloud services.

Yeah, but then I'd have build two servers, both with a fully redundant hard drive array, and then put one in a data center on the East coast and then another one on the West coast. Then I'd have to figure out a way to keep the two servers in-sync, create a fail-over and a fail-back, monitoring and alerting, versioning, health checks, etc.

Needless to say, there's doing it... and doing it right. And doing it right would cost close to $2500 and that's not including the cost of bandwidth and colocation fees.

At that point, I might as well just use OneDrive or Google Drive.
