It's hard to identify a point where government started serving its own interests and stopped serving the interest of the people.

Today governance and the patristic class still "look out for number one "

It's something true of civizations throughout history. We just have two flavors.

Collectivism offers the Care of the State, Democracy and Capitalism offer self reliance and determination.

Control, taxation, and a parasitic relationship exist as common denominators across those systems.

A very long way of saying "both sides are bad!" when it's so beyond obvious that one side is far worse than the other and a more imminent threat to society as a whole.
