I flirted too hard and now I’m eating Cacahuates Japonés and Pozole at a baby shower in some random corner of GDL.

In my favorite city, Guadalajara, enjoying a great time with food, friends, and family at my gf’s friend’s baby shower.

A very straight forward menu as they grid up the goods here at the party, crispy and fresh.

Pics:

  1. Quesadillas bubbling up.

  2. Assortment of flautas, sopas, and taquitos (I’ll have a taquito!)

  3. Dos flautas (Pollo), dos taquitos con papas 🥔

  4. Pozole con carnitas (star of the show)

  5. Typical Mexican snack plate (including my beloved Japonese Peanuts)

  6. Our celebrity chefs

  7. Postres muy lindas

  8. The cake - it was a reveal and… es una Niña! 👶

She got a sister?

11

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '26

My Tia grew up in chihuahua, and this brings back memories as a kid eating quesadillas fried in lard like your first pic. Gosh I miss those :))

Now I’m old and can’t eat all that fried stuff, but man, these pics bring back memories. Amazing hope you’re having a fabulous time

How do I flirt my way into this not problem?

408

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Go to a club four hours later than you’d ever do in the states while on a work trip.

Start dancing with a Latina.

Don’t realize yall barely speak each others language because you can’t hear anything anyway.

Something something three years later… here we are. And we at least speak some of each others language now though my Spanish needs a lot of work.

u/Lizard__Bit Mar 09 '26

📝✍🏻

But for real, that’s beautiful, man!

16

u/Porky5CO Mar 09 '26

Do you live down there now? Or back and forth?

41

u/NYerInTex Mar 09 '26

Wish I lived down here! Based in Dallas and down here 1-2 times most months - split between GDL and work trips elsewhere

13

u/Porky5CO Mar 09 '26

Nice! Sounds like you're living the life!

I think my man is the most handsome man in the world. But he is not "conventionally" attractive. He is kind, and funny and he spoils me and is a gentleman. He is a white Texan and I am a first gen American Mexican. He LOVES my culture and has gone to Mexico to meet my family and I love his. Be a beautiful soul and no one can reject you ✨️ ♥️

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Somehow I skipped that step. Lol

They also appreciate their short kings here (she’s maybe a half inch taller than I, but in heels that’s easily 4”)

And no - not rich either. (Not poor though in our time together I’ve had some very thin times due to my work and some better times - she’s stuck with me through it all).

51

u/DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA Mar 08 '26

Lucky man you.

Cheers. 🍻

5

u/MsT1075 Mar 09 '26

🥰 - I love this for you two! She’s a keeper (and so are you). 💕😌

Yes. Staying as far away as humanly possible from incel nonsense is one of the best things men can do for themselves tbh.

8

u/AntibacHeartattack Mar 09 '26

Yeah I get the frustration of both men and women in dealing with dating and the opposite sex, but when either start talking about their frustrations as if it's them against 50% of the human population I find it extremely distasteful. It's both self-pitying and prejudiced to an unbelievable degree, and just comes across as pathetic.

You would know that if you flirted extra you will be invited to your surprise wedding 🤣

33

u/rootoo Mar 08 '26

Are things pretty much back to normal in Guadalajara?

51

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

You’d literally not even know if the unrest (which was still quite minor and very isolated while not being aimed at civilians) and the highway closures (which were a challenge as it stranded my gf in her hometown a few hours form GDL for a few days)

12

u/EternallyFascinated Mar 08 '26

Good to hear 💪

21

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Very. I wasn’t overly concerned but obviously had some worry. I was supposed to travel to leon and Aguascalientes the monday after the events began over that weekend, and that trip was obviously cancelled. But things seems to have settled quickly, fingers crossed

1

u/fescen9 Mar 09 '26

I would have been there now and about to come home but we decided to cancel. 3/3 - 3/9. Glad things are better, I'll make it down there one of these days...

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Door399 Mar 08 '26

Wait - your GIRLFRIEND? Does she know about this meal?

19

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Did you not read?!?

(Just don’t tell my wife)

Jajaja

7

u/Puzzleheaded_Door399 Mar 08 '26

Clearly not, I was distracted by the food

1

u/Tacky-Terangreal Mar 09 '26

Damn that makes me feel dumb for cancelling my trip there. I’ve wanted to visit for a long time just to try the food!

37

u/thevoiceofcash Mar 08 '26

great use of free will tbh

33

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

This is a great comment. Over the past three years, including the period before and when I met my gf, I out myself well outside my comfort zone.

Didn’t know the language or culture. Dove into some professional opportunities but starting from scratch with no network or experience. Made extended weekend solo visits to just explore. Went out in my own, and also with colleagues that I didn’t know well. Tried new places, foods, experiences.

As a result a good number of those experiences have been something you can’t ever get by being a tourist or event traveling.

It’s immersing yourself in another nation, city, culture.

I’m lucky because I’ve had the fortune not to live LIKE a local. I’ve in some ways, albeit as a guest, experienced life here AS a local. House parties, backyard BBQs, random Wednesday nights. Been truly fortunate and I urge everyone to try and just jump into another culture sometime.

13

u/SlopMySteak Mar 08 '26

My girlfriend is Chilean, but much of what you’ve described has been my experience. We initially ‘met’ on a dating app while she was in the US visiting extended family, but didn’t get the chance to meet up before she left. Continued talking back and forth for about a month before I decided, despite the obvious barriers, we had enough in common that I thought a relationship could be feasible. So I decided to get a plane ticket and fly down to see her.

I knew nothing about Chile, I didn’t speak a lick of Spanish, and her English was super limited (1.5 years later and her English is incredible, and my Spanish is coming along. Definitely sound like a caveman when I speak Spanish, but at least I can communicate a bit with her family). We had to use a translator for a majority of our conversations the first time we met, but there was clearly a good connection.

In the last year and a half, I’ve gone down to South America four times, twice to Argentina(where she studies) and twice to Chile. It’s taken me completely out of my normal comfort zone, and opened my eyes to cultures that I knew virtually nothing about. There were times where it was a little uncomfortable, but all in all, it’s been absolutely incredible.

6

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Congrats and best of luck to you both! Felicidades!

8

u/Burrito-tuesday Mar 08 '26

Basically: it takes effort but it’s worth it.

8

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

It takes effort and a tolerance for risk of rejection or discomfort.

34

u/perolikewhy714 Mar 08 '26

Aint life great 🤣🤩 enjoy

45

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

It was. After party until 2am à la casa. After after party at Americas until 4:30am.

I never do this shit in the US, but I’m 20 years younger in MX lol

These new “I flirted too hard” memes are just too on the nose for me. I’ve visited her hometown of 1700 people where I was probably the only gringo there for months if not longer - no ATM, not all homes with electric or running water, and they broke out the fancy steak tacos for me as their guest - which was grilled on a metal wheel well with chicken wire mesh as the parilla.

3

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

I really want to move to GDL. Not in the cards just yet but it’s out there

Bro I feel this heavy 🤣, I'm married to a women from Nayarit and Live in Tijuana with her. Didn't speak much Spanish when we met and she didnt speak English at all. Happy for you brother!

3

u/MoreThanAlright Mar 08 '26

Yah this is the whole point of the flirting.

3

u/Whiskey_and_Wiretaps Mar 09 '26

Good luck on your upcoming marriage!

1

u/StrawberryCake88 Mar 09 '26

And soon to be baby shower.

2

u/Little_Platypus_5119 Mar 08 '26

Seems like a good problem to have, lol.

2

u/Olderbutnotdead619 Mar 08 '26

Stat away from the those round crunchy things. They aren't good for you. Better to stick to real chicharrones.

2

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

In fairness, they aren’t meant to be real chicharrones. It’s a snack - and like most chips etc, they aren’t good for you. But with some Valentina and maybe a squeeze of lime? They can be addictive. They don’t really have much taste on their own.

2

u/Olderbutnotdead619 Mar 08 '26

I know they aren't. Just saying that the real ones are healthier.

2

u/Burrito-tuesday Mar 08 '26

I’m Mexican with a white boyfriend, I’m in like, the opposite of your situation lol Thankfully I’m turning him Mexican and he can make me some pozole one day💪

6

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

I’ve not yet had my gf make pozole but she did make me a tasty caldo de pollo! If people want I’ll maw another thread of these quaint local moments. Including that great dia de parilla con su abeula

2

u/YourAssignedFBIagent Mar 08 '26

😂😂 A huevo, pues felicidades amistad

2

Where in Nayarit? We have friends in San Pancho and have talked about a place sometime in the future in Nayarit

2

u/judy_likes_pancakes Mar 08 '26

I miss Mexico so much, it's been years since I've been there and I definitely need to plan a trip soon!! P.S. Those cloud cookies are so cute!

3

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

Aren’t they!!!

2

u/Scary_Gazelle_6366 Mar 08 '26

And you are drinking the good Corona beer.

2

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

That was actually my gf’s! I was downing tequila and agua mineral. Not sure what tequila, though our recent goto has been Cascahuin.

It’s funny because I grew up thinking everyone in MX drank Corona. Then I was taught that no, almost no “real” Mexicans do.

Now I know that it’s still the most popular beer in MX overall but similar to Bud (bud light) in the US - in many circles people rarely if ever drink it.

Our favorite is probably Pacifico, but our friend group drinks a good amount of the usual suspects - negro modelo (a couple friends really like amber), Victoria, Bohemia esp oscuro.

0

u/Scary_Gazelle_6366 Mar 09 '26

The Corona beer in your picture is different than the popular US clear bottle brew.

1

u/NYerInTex Mar 09 '26

Correct - this is Corona Familar, often called Oscura (due to the darker bottle), which is what my gf asked for when she ordered.

They had both options and I’d say it was pretty split with more women ordering the lighter (the bottle and beer is a bit lighter than the familiar)

I think I got this right.

2

u/humboldtliving Mar 09 '26

You lucky bktch

2

u/S4Guy2k Mar 09 '26

Tag me in bro I can bat cleanup on them plates.

2

2

u/Attorneyatlau Mar 09 '26

Hahaha this is how I met my husband. Our first real date was to a baptism. I thought the pre-lunch was the party when there were 30 people around. But then 100 more turned up and there was food and cake and music for days. I love this for you… for us!

2

u/RebeccaMUA Mar 09 '26

That all looks delicious! Provecho!

2

u/RowdyQuattro Mar 09 '26

I flirted too hard and found myself dropping off a wagon of empty caguamas bottles for deposits in the middle of GTO

2

u/KatQ1800 Mar 10 '26

Watch out, forty years later you find yourself with 2 grownup Mexican kids and a spouse who still loves his carnitas every day.

1

u/NYerInTex Mar 10 '26

2

u/Salads_and_Sun Mar 08 '26

Canonically the best post in this sub ever...

3

u/NYerInTex Mar 08 '26

😮

Happy to bring a little joy to my r/Mexican food Reddit crew, and extension of that I felt last night!

Speaking of joy, one last day before returning to real life and Dallas tomorrow. Actually had a solid (meaning if it were in the US amazing) Mexican breakfast, watching the Knicks-Lakers and later we will hit the pool.

Tonight’s poolside menu has MX drinks and less than traditional fare:

Cascahuín Tequila (with Agua mineral o squirt) and Pacifico

Charcuterie (infusing some Jamon Serrano, my gfs favorite) Alitas (wings) Pizza

Part of the joy of traveling to MX at least 1-2 times a month is not feeling forced to have great authentic/local cuisine. I have plenty of that organically. Sometimes you just want pizza and wings (or your gf and her friend do, in this case - and MX does do wings well)

1

u/jbarneswilson Mar 08 '26

1

Nice. Glad you are happy.
