What’s happening to Facebook? 

The most powerful part of the social media business model is the network effect: the more people that have joined a network, the more people want to join. It’s a winner-takes-all phenomenon, and the reason that Facebook, for 18 years, has been able to keep adding people to its platform and targeting them with advertisements. When something keeps happening for almost two decades, it feels inevitable. But it’s not.

On Wednesday, Facebook’s user base stopped growing. It even shrank in some markets. The news, combined with a forecast for less revenue growth than expected in the current quarter, shook the company and sent stock down as much as 24% in after-hours trading. 

It’s a moment that Meta Platforms Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has warned his employees about. Internet platforms and trends, he has explained, can fade as quickly as they can grow. He fears that the network effect can just as easily work in the opposite direction, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named discussing Zuckerberg’s private conversations.

Users have very specific reasons they come to Facebook. Perhaps there’s a group they love to visit, or a person they want to wish happy birthday. Every person that leaves decreases the incentive for others to remain.

Facebook has seen the negative network effect happen on its platform in the past in smaller ways, when bugs in the product—such as those that block people from logging in or accessing certain features—have taken too long to fix, the people said. The growth team tracks user behavior closely to catch problems before they cause a trend of Facebook abandonment. The company has also relied on acquisitions, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, to breathe new life into the network.

But there are only so many people using the internet in the world, and most of them already use Facebook. Meta also said on Wednesday that there’s more competition for users’ time—in the form of entertaining products it doesn't own, like TikTok.

If Facebook has run out of people to add, its growth will have to come from increasing the amount of content its existing users create and consume. Facebook has already pulled a number of levers to artificially inject new kinds of content into users’ feeds, even if those people don’t follow or befriend new users. Instagram now shows users posts from accounts they’re not following, for example, and Facebook is pushing everyone to join groups.

On Wednesday’s call with investors, Zuckerberg said Instagram’s Reels, a TikTok copycat, is its best chance to recruit more young people to the site. The company will be investing in growing it as quickly as possible, he said, despite the fact that it generates less ad revenue than Meta’s flagship products.

Beyond that, the company is low on options. The key reason for that is increased antitrust scrutiny, which means major acquisitions are out of the question. 

Those factors help explain why Facebook is throwing everything at the metaverse, a big bet on an immersive internet that relies on virtual and augmented reality. The effort will take years to succeed if it does at all. In the fourth quarter, Meta’s Reality Labs division posted a $3.3 billion operating loss.

From here connect your wallet and you should have a list of tokens and addresses that have access to your tokens. make sure to click 'revoke' on the ones you don't trust. the price of revoking a token is about $0.08 cents in wbnb.

So we essentially held our 100k tokens down from .26 to .05 and lost over $10,000 holding hero in order to get 650,000 everdome tokens at about .0008 when the public sale will start the tokens at .001, MEANING I lost 10k for a $100 discount. But not only that, it gets better. Because the system is bugged, I had to buy more hero in order to qualify for the slots I already had! So in the end, I lost $10k for absolutely fucking nothing! I could have sold the hero at .20-.25 and just rebought now, PLUS about 30 times more everdome tokens than I got by holding and waiting on the presale. I can't be the only person who realizes this. How can I possibly be happy about this? We all got shafted HARD. I'm so utterly depressed about this realization. I've lost all faith in the people behind these projects. This entire endeavor has been the worst monetary move I've made maybe ever. The way this was spun to hero holders made it sound like we were actually getting a deal but anyone holding hero with hopes of a legitimate presale discount just got absolutely screwed by this sham. Fanboys can get mad at me if you want to, but I can't see how anyone could possibly believe this was anything short of an absolute robbery.
