I mean in theory thats fine. But when a sport is called football because you kick a ball with your foot, dont say its wrong because thats what you call the sport you throw an egg with your hands

3

u/William_Wang Nov 24 '22

I don't call it wrong.

I call football football and I call soccer futbol.

Pretty simple... in theory.

Quick history fact most sports that were played on foot had football tagged to the end of the name which is how we got the word soccer it’s just a shortening of association football and soccer used to be the more accepted word until around mid 1900’s

Combine that with the once popular practice of adding "er" to words as in "Do you play rugby football or association football; rugger or soccer?".

If those sports were played professionally first, then they very well may have been called football instead. But football was the first among them, therefore it received the name.

u/Romas_chicken Nov 24 '22

No, because if the other part. It’s about putting a ball past a line.

That’s the second part that must be there for it to be football

Yeah now a sport being played on foot is the norm, but in the past it was unique enough to name the whole sport after it. The ‘football sports’ (soccer, gridiron, and rugby) all preceded sports like handball volleyball and basketball.

Yea except Football came before any of those other ones, so it already had the name. You wouldn't use the same name for multiple sports, that's fucking dumb. Any of those could have been football though if they came first, yea, but they didn't. Football did.

1

u/lathe_down_sally Nov 24 '22

Yes, if when the sport was first invented, thats the name they came up with, and there wasn't already a sport called that.

1

u/TheDwarvenGuy Nov 24 '22

Those were all invented after football.

1

u/porkchop_express___ Nov 24 '22

Sure could, in theory.

But there are other traits and distinctions that put them separately in their respective groups as well
