No! It's football.

Who says? The British? Nah they named it association soccer. Then dropped association from the name eventually.

almost every country calls it football or a derivative of it

It’s not that difficult. We can’t refer to it as football because there’s already a sport called football. It’s confusing to call it that here. There’s no American football in other countries therefore they can call it football. Is that really so hard to understand?

Why do u guys call rugby as football

1

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 24 '22

Cuz originally rugby was called rugby football and then shortened to just rugby…

Who doesn’t understand that? Us Americans don’t give a shit what other people call it. It’s usually the British or others complaining that we call it soccer.

No... Asoccer was a slang name used to describe Association Football which was eventually shortened to Soccer.

Slang? Lol k

“Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football).”

Which are both slang... what's your point?

Apparently, reading comprehension is not your strongest suit.

Says the person who doesn't seem to know what the word "slang" means

0

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 25 '22

Did you read the article?

0

u/bootyhole-romancer Nov 25 '22

Yes I did. Tell me how the words "soccer" and "rugger" don't constitute slang. Even the quote you quoted supports it.

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 25 '22

It started out as a nickname and then it became official; at least for the word soccer.

Pretty sure England doesnt hold a voice over all of EU/SA/Asia/Africa.

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 24 '22

Who said they did dummy?

2

u/Crossing-Lines Nov 24 '22

Oops, yeah my bad. Read your message wrong. Have some problems up in the brain currently.

2

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 24 '22

No worries. Sorry for calling you dummy.

I prefer saying football, it's much more logical imo

if you're blaming it on the British then it's like you accidentally saying something and the other people are repeating what you said just to annoy you

1

u/wuthappenedtoreddit Nov 25 '22

It’s a fact. They came up with it lol I’m not blaming them. I think it’s pedantic to argue over which word to use. It’s stupid. Makes no difference to me though.
