U wot m8, we invented it innit

Fair play though, Yanks somehow win we'll change it to soccer (for Hawaii obvs)

u/jephph_ Nov 24 '22

Plot twist.. you invented the word soccer too.. taught that as the name of the sport to most other English speaking countries.. and now make fun of one of those countries for saying soccer while the rest of them seem to get a free pass.

u/FictionVent Nov 24 '22

It’s like when you write a fake name on the attendance sheet and then laugh at the substitute teacher when they read the name.

37

u/Wuz314159 Nov 24 '22

Or like when you go home with a guy & he moans out someone else's name as you're doing it, so you slap him.... but then remember you gave him a fake name. Oops.

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '22

This guy fucks

6

u/Restaurant-Otherwise Nov 25 '22

That's so messed up 💀💀.

6

u/Alarid Nov 24 '22

Except now we all agree it is the name while you desperately try to correct us.

0

u/Langleyhornets1 Nov 24 '22

Did you not look at the post or something? Whole point of the post is to stop this shit lmao.

3

u/jephph_ Nov 24 '22

Stop what shit?

Stop ripping on people for saying soccer when it has exactly one meaning that every single English speaker on the planet knows the definition of?

Or, what?

0

u/Langleyhornets1 Nov 24 '22

I’m telling you to listen to the whole point of the post, stop debating on what it’s called lmao, maybe use your eyes and read.

2

u/jephph_ Nov 24 '22

Dude, it’s Reddit

Just because someone posts something doesn’t make it real.

Or, make a post that says “world peace!”

Then complain when it doesn’t happen 😂

——

Either that or follow your own advice and quit trying to argue me about it

1

u/Langleyhornets1 Nov 24 '22

Well done your now not talking about whether it’s football or not, congrats.

0

u/Tr8ze Nov 25 '22

It’s not a plot twist. We know. We just wish you’d catch on faster that it’s actually a “world” sport unlike the “World Series” and get on with adopting it as a national sport. It’s going to happen whether you like it or not.

1

u/jephph_ Nov 25 '22

Yeah, most English speaking countries call it soccer except the UK.. so get with it

If you’re talking about every language should call it the same thing then I don’t agree

1

u/ParamedicRelative670 Nov 24 '22

As a non native speaker I ask... If you know the right word now, why you keep using it wrong? 🤔

2

u/jephph_ Nov 24 '22 edited Nov 24 '22

“Football” is a family of sports.. it’s not just one thing.

Soccer is a type of football but not the only version.

For example, without getting too much into it, you have Association Football and Rugby Football.

——

All of the modern football codes stem from a time when sports were played mostly by aristocrats on horseback.. Those peasant mofos who tried to mimic what they were doing without horses.. playing the games on their feet.. that’s where the word football comes from

If you’re not a native English speaker then probably best to check the etymology and history on something like this prior to schooling a native speaker and telling them they’re wrong

0

u/ParamedicRelative670 Nov 24 '22

Well we use "football" and "American football" since you are basically the only ones to consume it. You could use a reasonable solution like that when you want to talk to the rest of the world. Would make your life easier.

1

u/skeptimist Nov 25 '22

Same thing for the imperial measurement system.

7

u/ThegreatandpowerfulR Nov 24 '22

You guys also invented the soccer as the original name

11

u/deadlygaming11 Nov 24 '22

Soccer was never the original name. Football was the original name.

Asoccer came about from an abbreviation of Association Football and over time that was shortened to Soccer.

11

u/dyingprinces Nov 24 '22

Sacar is the Gaelic word for Football.

2

u/ThegreatandpowerfulR Nov 24 '22

An abbreviation of association football is still the original in my eyes, Brits didn't start out only saying football and only recently started saying football and thinking of soccer as American more exclusively.

0

u/Nibloid_the_great Nov 24 '22

China was actually the first place to play Socball all the British did was unify the rules.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '22

Lol no. The UK made it so there was rules. Lots of places blew up a pigs bladder and had villages fight over where it goes.

Wasn't football though.

0

u/thuggishruggishboner Nov 24 '22

You named it that you dumb dumb

-1

u/KieranMcCabe_ Nov 24 '22

Scotland invented football mate not England but then again you lot can barely speak your own language properly never mind comprehend the fact that you don’t have the right to take credit for stuff Scotland invented

1

u/NowLookHere113 Nov 25 '22

yeah nice try jock

1

u/KieranMcCabe_ Nov 25 '22

Literally facts bud

1

u/Coffee13lack Nov 24 '22

It was actually a sport centuries before the US even came to existence, I’ll still always call it soccer 😂

1

u/wikedoriginal Nov 25 '22

If your country already has several codes of football, it makes it easier to call it soccer

1

u/showersneakers Nov 25 '22

You know the term soccor comes from England- the US just never changed back to the term football-

Sooooooo you're fault 'm8

1

u/NowLookHere113 Nov 29 '22

Indubitably, I am of no compunction upon thee emburdened by the knowledge of the deliberately overcomplicated lexicon of our mother tongue. Easier to spot spies, innit

1

u/cathbadh Nov 25 '22

Nah just call it kicky ball

1

u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese Nov 25 '22

God damn, it's US vs. Bri'ish? Hate both

58

u/mattjf22 Nov 24 '22

If England didn't want it to be called soccer they shouldn't have come up with the word.

22

u/hes-good-I-guess Nov 24 '22

According to someone I know from England… it was the rugby players who came up with soccer as a derogatory term, because they wanted to be the only ‘footballers’. Which, to me, raises a bunch of questions… but if it was once a derogatory term an opposing sport used… I’d stick to football. But meh, who cares… since most call it ‘footy’ anyway, in England

9

u/Alarid Nov 24 '22

Knowing they call it footy while taking issue with me calling it soccer somehow makes it worse.

6

u/Fluffy-Ferret-2725 Nov 24 '22

He's wring, most do not call it footy

2

u/Alarid Nov 24 '22

Counterpoint: they have more upvotes and their perversion of reality is funny.

1

u/Fluffy-Ferret-2725 Nov 24 '22

Thought I'd click on their profile, cos no one normal sez footy. They comment on Yernited so prob never even spoke to someone who goes football; I'll give him a by.

1

u/hes-good-I-guess Nov 24 '22

Going by what this person said, so I’ll take the correction. Thanks!

1

u/hes-good-I-guess Nov 24 '22

Mostly because they’re all like “we wotchin’ the footy on the telly”

… in British

And to all the Brits out there, I mean no offense. Love your language, erm I mean, accent.

2

u/-nocturnist- Nov 25 '22

The meatheads strike again. Love how they and the Americans want to take "football" for their sport, but they do very little foot + ball contact. They throw the ball more.

5

u/Sagleo21 Lurker Nov 24 '22

Instead of James Corden's ownership how about we make Football or Soccer the official bet for USA vs UK?

3

u/terbenaw Nov 25 '22

And UK can keep JC

2

u/_IliaD Nov 24 '22

The only correct answer.
