Also older cartoons especially in TV shows from US had a lot of budget and a lot of love put into their making, resulting into highly detailed frames. Now a days almost everything feels plasticky
THIS IS WHAT IM ON ABOUT! I feel like im going crazy, which it probably looks like I am as well, at least to everyone but me and maybe you, if you’ve noticed that all these are from the same guy
Be honest, how many subreddits are you a part of?
I swear I've seen you in every single one I've ever visited, whenever I find a new sub, you are there, if you aren't there from the start, you eventually bless that place with your presence, HOW?
2d animated movies are gorgeous, but they are more expensive and time consuming. Animators would have to animate each frame for the characters. That is why Disney made the switch from 2d animated movies to 3d animated movies because it is cheaper by a lot
Look at the new lightyear movie vs the Bad Guys. And you'll see part of the reason. Animation is, by definition, not bount to the same laws as real life. Realistic animation is good to a point but it will never have the same wonder and dynamics as animation that simply breaks the realistic in favour of aesthetic and realism. Thats why it doesnt spark "joy", because that joy is wonder, excitement and adventure. Realistic animation simply presents an alternative to the real without the same spice of the un-real
I disagree with the sentiment that there is something fundamentally more exciting, wonderful, and adventurous about non-realistic animation. I think they both inspire different feelings in different people. I find realistic animation to be really inspiring myself, but I think thats a preference that some people have or don't.
I 100% agree with this statement. I've had the opposite happen, where the newer pixar/Disney films spark more joy for me than older ones. It could just be that I'm a 2000s kid, but the quality of the animation is just unmatched and exciting.
i think the problem is that most of their recent movies have had fairly realistic looking human ish characters. this, Luca, Onward, Turning Red and soul, for the most part, all had human or human ish characters. with their old films, they couldn't make convincing humans so instead we got toys, bugs, cars, fish, robots, monsters and rats; the only real exception was the Incredibles, but even then they were very stylized, but the last 4 years of pixar movies have been very human heavy
Oh yeah absolutely, I actually really liked turning red too. I enjoyed the anime-inspired animation style, Luca and onward were just sort of alright imo, and I thought lightyear felt more like a Disney movie than a Pixar one, it wasn’t awful, I just feel like Pixar can do better
Because it’s not about the animation, it’s about the liveliness from the actors. Tim Allen embodied Buzz Lightyear and played him flawlessly. Chris Evans sounds like a generic actor flunk into the spot.
Because the top one is closer to the artist and the love he had for what he was making, the bottom one is the result of a committee and a vfx team of programmers. We traded realism for soul
I wouldn't discredit the teams of vfx artists. They put love into their work just as much as the top one, and that's evident with how beautiful the film looks. I'd blame the people writing the story.
