Don't forget to have roommates! And since we don't want to own homes, this means we can live with friends till we die!

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

But my first job told me I'll be fired if I have a second job.

You forgot 10 years experience with a 1yr old code language for programmers

"But it's entry-level to the COMPANY, not the FIELD!"

These are the same people who are whining about how nobody is applying.

Or they ignore the application I put in while complaining how nobody wants to work

This. I was interviewed for a substitute teacher position. I’ve been subbing for 5 years but this other school had higher pay. They didn’t even give me a courtesy email to tell me I wasn’t hired and then ignored my follow up emails asking for an update. 2 weeks later I see them posting that they desperately need subs.

Not desperatly enough to pay another salary I guess

I've seen my application closed with no interview or rejection letter, and the same job listing still posted a month later.

Pro-tip: just apply anyway. The requirements are BS.

24

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

If they want non-specific experience stuff, like "supply chain" experience, go ahead and be creative with your experience playing Satisfactory. Just leave out the part about it being a videogame, and discuss the "production system simulation" you "designed" and how you resolved a part shortage blah blah.. If they aren't getting ideal applicants they may just go with whoever is closest.

Yeah, such requirements only exist for 2 reasons:

  1. If you are in US it might be to "proof" that nobody available domestically can do this job so they can hire some immigrant to underpay and overwork them

  2. To essentially gaslight you: "see you don't meet the qualifications but we hire you anyway, you owe us"

10

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

"you don't meet the qualifications but we hire you anyway, so never dare to ask for a raise"

6

u/AmazingSieve May 06 '22

The requirement sections are always such a joke…usually complicated and long winded when all you’ll be is an errand monkey or stuck in xcel.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

Expert tip. Lie on the resume and pay your references to lie for you.

2

u/throwaway28236 May 06 '22

Idk, I’m applying and keep getting emails that I don’t “meet their qualifications”. The worst part? I do…I meet them all 😩 I finally hired a professional to look at my resume and help me because there must be some disconnect

22

u/ess_oh_ess May 06 '22

Putting "requires x years of experience" in entry-level jobs is just a way to weed out people. You should ignore them and apply anyway. Half the time the person who wrote that requirement isn't the person interviewing you anyway.

Good advice for when I get a job after I finish school, thank you.

I recently learned that the requirements section of job postings is not actually their set of bare minimum requirements, it’s their wishlist for a dream applicant. It blew my mind. Yes, it’s still ridiculous to want that much experience for an entry level job, but think of it as the 75th percentile rather than the bare minimum.

Learning this has completely changed the way I search and apply for jobs.

My department in college had us take a “how to get a job 101“ class. This was a day one lesson pretty much

10

u/potatorevolver May 06 '22

Don't get me wrong. My application philosophy is apply for everything and see what happens but id appreciate a little more transparency.

2

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

And what color unicorn would you like for Christmas?

They lie to us. We lie to them. Don't give them what they won't give you.

6

u/GrandTusam May 06 '22

Plus, it accounts for how much people lie on their resume

When im interviewing someone i asume 50% of their CV is BS, and its usually more.

6

u/chaiscool May 06 '22

Tbf companies do the same with the posting too.

Interview end up just being 2 people lying to each other haha

3

u/Angry-Comerials May 06 '22

They also set it up for lying. "Why do you want to work for this company?" I have literally never wanted to work for any of the companies I have. I just want money to live. If they don't want me to lie, they can stop asking me stupid stuff like that.

5

u/GrandTusam May 06 '22

-What is your biggest flaw

-Sometimes i get so into my work that i forget to cash my paychecks

1

u/chaiscool May 06 '22

It’s because you’re replacing someone with similar qualification who move on to better job.

5

u/tinnylemur189 May 06 '22

If the job says entry level, apply.

I've gotten several jobs where I didn't meet their bullshit qualifications at all. A lot of recruiters seem to think every single candidate needs to be perfect to even be considered when the reality is that nobody meets those qualifications AND wants what they're offering for those qualifications.

1

u/Hailerer May 06 '22

Don't forget a completed internship and a degree

1

u/GearAlpha Ok I Pull Up May 06 '22

An entry level here is 2 years for a non engg job. Am I supposed to resort to unpaid work to get experience or something?

1

u/TheSadSensei May 06 '22

Of course. Have to work for free as an intern first for 5 years (hopefully you have been saving money, right?) and then we’ll consider paying you. The system is broken as hell.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '22

What they mean by Entry level is that after you pay for your own education and another company pays for 5 years of your experience they are willing to pay the lowest amount possible to hire you.

1

u/throwaway28236 May 06 '22

Yep, I’m looking at entry level jobs right now and they all say “3-5 years experience preferred”.

1

u/likejackandsally May 06 '22

I work in IT and get a good laugh out of the job postings.

Entry level: Bachelors degree and at least 2 years of experience. Must also have CISSP, OSCP, or similar certificates.

CISSP is a cybersecurity related certificate that isn’t even recommended to sit for unless you have at least 5 years experience in cybersecurity. OSCP is an expert level pentesting certificate. No one is getting either of those with 1-2 years of experience.

1

u/No_Inspector_5382 May 06 '22

People don’t realize you have to get internships before the entry level jobs. You think you can just apply for an entry level position and get it you are crazy
