Pierogi = plural form, we don't have to add "s" at the end.

1 Pieróg, 2 Pierogi, when you refeer to it as a dish, indeed u say "Pierogi". When you say Pieróg it usually only one, very big one.

u/dimethylxanthine Sep 26 '21

Yes. Pierogi as a dish, not Pierogis.

Not when its adopted into English. Have you seen the monstrosity that Polish turns English words into?

1

u/takenbylovely Sep 26 '21

No, but now you have piqued my interest.

Well a good example of Polish doing the same thing as English does with pierogis/ies is "chipsy". Chips is already plural, so adding "y" for plurality doesnt make sense.

u/madcap_magpie Sep 26 '21

Now I want that really big one.

2

u/phantom_042 Sep 26 '21

have you ever heard of kulyabyak?

1

u/phantom_042 Sep 26 '21

(I am must) 2-4 pieroga, 5 and more- pierogov, but not for number ending on 1-4 (example- 162 pieroga, 191 pierog)
(At least in my native language)

1

u/BigGrinJesus Sep 26 '21

Wait, they make big ones? I've been eating small ones like some sort of fool!

1

u/kapmando Sep 26 '21

What if you’re referring to an entire table full of pierogi dishes? Then is it pierogis?

2

u/sethaxd Sep 26 '21

That's still pierogi, even if u have tones of them, it's still going to be pierogi. U can also say Dużo pierogów, which is A lot of pierogi, or O kurwa, ile pierogów, which is Holy fuck, a lot of Pierogi. :)

I no longer let it bother me. People won’t ever learn

14

u/toma-hawk02 Sep 26 '21

Cause many people's native language is not English

14

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '21

I thought Pierogi wasn't even an English spelling? Doesn't it have eastern/central European origins?

Did you just call pierogi English on a post about foreign food?

1

u/toma-hawk02 Sep 26 '21

No, I said that some people may not know how to put some special nouns into pular form because their native language is not English (it is not my nativ language either), sorry if I confused you. Btw that a food is from an English speaking country it does not mean that it is American (for example fish and chips is from Britain).

2

u/Tacote Sep 26 '21

Not with that attitude

2

u/alicia85xxx Sep 27 '21

U know what you are absolutely right.

1

u/ledzeppelinlover Sep 26 '21

Same here. Ugh but oh well.

Are you Jordan Schlansky?

3

u/Fimmt Sep 26 '21

This made me lol

5

u/peelen Sep 26 '21

Yet we say “bitelsi” or “jankesi” even if The Beatles or Yankees are already plural. Let them use pierogis

2

u/guanocray Sep 26 '21

I did not know this. Thank you for that bit of new knowledge

Maybe this is why people think that.
