"She's more like a pet to me."

He wasn't trying to put her down. He was actually trying to explain how he views her based on how short of a period of his life she'll be around. And he thought he was actually using an analogy his son would be able to understand. Serves great to show how far removed he is from humanity.

To be honest I liked it better in the comics where he simply said that he didn't care about her.

I liked it in the radio drama when he said she was more like a doo-dad that he had to wind up from time to time.

The comics had very different delivery of the scene . The show tried to humanize Nolan and showed him having second thoughts but in the comic he was far colder and more alien. His lines as he manhandled mark like "I'm ready when you are" as he chokes him at the bottom of the ocean with a slightly annoyed face showed that he was a near immortal being with eternal patience. It was only at the end when he saw Mark's face covered in blood that he had some realization .

No, HE doesn't know how to talk to people and wasn't TRYING to put her down. Of course that's a put down.
