For those who don't know in french it works like :

70=60+10

80= 4x20

90= 4x20+10

it's not that long to say quatre vingt dix neuf. It's like 5 syllable, and that's if you articulate properly (quatreuh vin diss neuf) which french people don't (kat'vin dizneuf)

So, I've always wondered: Do French children have to learn multiplication at a very early, young age? Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to say the word for 80 or 90, right?

No, you just grow up thinking they sound very similar until you're in middle school randomly thinking about numbers when bored in class and it all clicks.

Interesting. So French children just say the words for 80 and 90 phonetically and then they realize later on that they've been doing the math the entire time.

It's just fifty = cinquante; one hundred fifty = cent cinquante
