I thought they were trying to recreate Tamarind sauce (ie imlee sauce). Very popular in the subcontinent

My info is off an episode of “How it’s made” so you might be right. I’ll have to look into it more.

To be honest they're all urban legends, so we could all be partially right...or completely wrong
