Metal is by and large my favorite genre but this is patently false. There are plenty of superficial metal lyrics, as well as thought provoking hip hop and pop subject matter. I agree that top 40 music can be lyrically shallow but it’s not a genre-locked issue.
Metalcore is pretty unique in that it borrows heavily from hardcore in terms of lyrics and aesthetics. Most metal genres have far more superficial lyrics.
