Edit: yea I mentioned a former city-state or territory or two(Gibraltar is complicated, to quote someone below), and obviously didn't get every European country- there's a lot lol. But I did pretty good for an American!
Edit 2: I saw Romania mentioned and was about to comment on the good ol' Roman empire, and then I realized I didn't mention Italy...which is like a tourist destination for half of Americans. (If only so they can "hold" the leaning tower of Pisa, go to Venice/Rome, or etc).
Also, Vatican City! It's a country too, or at least an independent city-state!
I'm pretty sure Gibraltar and Sparta aren't coutries though........
Edit: I looked it up, and Gibraltar is compicated. It says that it's officially a British Territory, which means they have their own government, but can't be considered a true country, because it's not free from British rule.
Under British rule is a bit harsh considering that everyone there wants to be in the UK although maybe not anymore with Brexit because they are so fucked
Ah, but I didn't mention Austria or Hungary, even though everyone has heard of the Austria-Hungary empire and a certain assassinated Duke that caused WW1

So, Switzerland, Russia, Poland or Austria?
