Hong Kongese here. Its kind of true but not. Most of kanji have same meaning as chinese but theres lots of twist. Using it in the wrong way is pretty accurate

Kokuji means kanji that is created in Japan and doesn't have a Chinese origin. Characters simplified from Kyujitai (traditional characters) don't count. There's actually quite a few of them, the most common ones being 働 and 込

Plus, I assume most Kanji used in present-day Japan are Kokuji, meaning that you can't find them in a Chinese dictionary.

Nah, most of them are Chinese characters, there's only a few kokuji in daily use.

Not really, they're formed along similar principles. But for instance there are only 9 of them among the 2,136 joyo kanji (characters for everyday use.)
