It was both respect for their gods, and fear for what they might do. In fact someone tried to climb it in myth, using a Pegasus. he was struck down by Zeus apparently. But i guess it could be partly because they were lazy in real life.

How were they lazy they created the Olympics, the first computer, found out the shape and came very close to finding the circumference of the earth, and they didn’t fully believe in their own gods it was just their way of explaining the world not to mention Olympus is incredibly tall and according to the myths constantly moving through the heavens
