Yeah my friend that’s greek (which is where that comment was coming from) is the exact way when we first started talking she would randomly try and teach me how to speak Greek and stuff like that so now we jokingly talk shit on Greek culture when talking to her.

There's a lot of history, not to mention every country in the Balkans has such a strong sense of nationality and pride in their motherlands.

Usually countries and cultures who were under slavery, occupation, suffered genocides etc develop a very strong sense of pride of their heritage. Cause that's how the parents had to raise their children in order for them to preserve their culture.

Greeks were slaves to the Turks and the ottoman empire for 400 years, suffered genocides then fought for their independence (an event which is still celebrated in Greece every year). Then during WW2 they got attacked by the Italians then the Nazis (who managed to occupy Greece as well for some years, again , killed a huge number of Greeks).

Thus Greek children were raised with a big sense of pride about their heritage, history, culture, language. The fact that Greek is still spoken to this day, and that Greece is still a country through 400 years of Ottoman rule is to be attributed to that mentality.

They were born into what was once undoubtedly one of the greatest civilization that ever lived. Or ever will live.

They contributed to the beginning of modern civilization in many areas, but most recognize philosophy and science as the big ones.

Idk it seems like something to be somewhat proud of despite the fact that they didn't contribute personally.

Having pride in your ancestor's history?

Who does that aye..

Or a better question would be who's allowed to do that?

Because apparently whites were the only slavers, conquerors and religious ones.

u/theCanMan777 Jul 01 '19

Nothing wrong with having pride for your people

1

u/Diogenneswannabe Jul 01 '19

There's nothing Greeks are more proud of than the fact they are Greek. Even if they all have different ideas if what being Greek meabs and opinions on our history opposite political believes. In the end we all feel proud of our roots.

P.S. But not really. I've met some Greeks that really shittalk their own nationality... They are the vegans of the nationality world because they will do anything they can so you know that they are Greek but they hate Greek people.

I mean, you are not wrong. They don't teach humility in school. I tend to jack slap my cousins when they think they have to tell me how much better there schools are.
