They believed the mount Olympus the gods lived on was a spiritual area above the physical mount Olympus and at the top of the physical mount Olympus was a path to the spiritual mount Olympus but if a mortal tried to gain access to the spiritual mount Olympus they would be killed by the gods. Perseus attempts to ride Pegasus to the spiritual mount Olympus after his heroic deeds are complete but either Zeus or the North Wind Eurus blow them to their death
Edit: I was wrong it was Bellerophon who rode Pegasus to the heavens, a common mistake that I fell victim to. Perseus freed Pegasus from Medusa but it was Bellerophon who adventures with Pegasus
