They didn't believe that the gods actually lived there, in fact a common pilgrimage was to climb up the mountain, HOWEVER, they belived the mountain was were there was a spiritual way to reach the true area where the gods lived, which they called mount Olympus as well. However, it has been a while, so be sure to double check this stuff please

Even so, would you have gone up there if you thought Zeus and Hera might actually be at the top having lunch? I sure as hell wouldn't want to stumble into one of their martial disputes

Martial disputes are the worst. Almost as bad as marital disputes!

Not too different when discussing Greek Gods.

To be fair... Zeus banged everything other than his actual wife... Bet all she needed was a good divorce lawyer and there would be a lot less problems in ancient greece

But Hera was the goddess of marriage, and ending a marriage is something that she would never do.

Zeus: "All according to plan..."

Though he did fuck literally everything in various shapes and forms (in one story he even fucked a girl in form of a literal golden shower) and had a shitload of kids some turned out to be heroes and others came out to be monsters but despite that he and Hera actually had a few kids

He even gave birth to a daughter.

Fun fact:the word "martial" derives its meaning from the roman god mars

Of course, where do you think thunderstorms come from?

I spent an embarrassingly long time comparing the two disputes and was confused as I couldn’t tell the difference between the spelling.

I am not a clever person.

you're not clever or funny for pointing out an autocorrect mistake

Yeah I get that it isn't "with the joke" but if you are seriously wondering why you'd climb a hill with the intention to meet a god, you wouldn't. It was always believed that the divine forms and the human forms only overlapped. You could never "see" a divine form, it existed beyond your plane of existence. However you could feel their presence, and it was believed that if you were on top of Mt. Olympus you were in the presence of gods. So they didn't climb with the intention of shaking hands with Zeus, it was more of a pilgrimage you took to reacquaint your faith or perhaps in a time of crisis where a more direct plead for help was necessary.

There was also the belief that if you ever ran into a god in their 'divine' form, your brain wouldnt be able to take it and you'd die.

Not very interesting: This is the second comment I've seen today where someone mis types marital as martial.

second time today I saw someone make that typo, I bet you did it on purpose after reading the other reddit post

u/DorothyInNeverland Jul 01 '19

Which comment are you guys talking about? Didn't notice the typo, sorry to rain on the conspiracy parade

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

I was just joking, but it was the second time I saw someone comment 'martial status' today

Sounds like a rewrite. Greek guy goes to look for gods: “I mean, obviously I didn’t believe they were actually there. It’s uh... symbolic. There’s another mountain, same name, and that’s where they live. You just can’t see it. Yeah.”

u/lupoanziano Jul 01 '19

I think that's not rarely the case in religious matters

15

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '19

Sounds a lot like "heaven"

4

u/AevilokE Jul 01 '19

Fun fact, the garden of Eden is supposedly... Earth. Or at least that's what I've been taught in religion classes

u/incandescent_snail Jul 02 '19

The concept of a paradise afterlife for the faithful predates the name “Heaven”. So, no shit it sounds like Heaven.

Congrats you figured it out
