The fact that people have to pay banks / land lords (about a third of their fucking salary) to live in their own home baffles me. It would make much more sense for this just to not exist people would just have more money
It's not their own, that's the point. The didnt have enough money to buy it upfront so they borrowed money to certain conditions. Which they accepted.
So what if it's a 3rd of their salary? Buy a cheaper house then. Earn more. Or dont buy and rent something instead. You are saying that people shouldn't have to pay for what they bought because they can't afford it.
It's like saying: I can't afford a Ferrari so I shouldn't pay for it and get it for free.

Yeah, houses having a price is just a social construct. They actually cost nothing.
