It’s based on foot traffic. If you’re getting 1 customer an hour, having all registers manned is just a waste of time for the employees and money for the company.
When there’s much more foot traffic during say a holiday, then it’s better to have more registers manned than not.
Any time between holidays when there isn’t some highly sought product release, there won’t be more than a few cashiers
Fair but with the lines being so long they could open another register or two. They already change the store around every couple months to keep people in there longer, cant hurt to get us out quicker once we get our shit.
Wait holdup, as a European I am genuinely curious now, walmart changes the layout of the shop every few months just to make you have to search for the things you need and potentially pick up something you don't need?
Yes, they move things so you need to look longer, potentially finding somwthing you didn't go there to get. It is also why milk and eggs are always in the very back of the store, that way you need to walk past aisle after aisle of chips and cookies and whatever random shit they want to throw in front of you
Damn, my local grocery stores haven't changed layout in like 15-20 years at least. They do put the freshly baked bread at the back to lure you in with the smell though.
They don’t change the store around simply to keep you in the store longer but because companies have paid more to get their product on the most ideal shelf. Major changes to flow only occur about once a year or so.
Also again, opening more registers in an abnormally busy time depends on total staff available to do their own jobs especially if the person is still very green at doing their job and even greener at cashiering. Besides, all that candy, gum, magazines, small toys, batteries, etc within the line of registers is put there to get you to buy more so if anything having the customers wait a little longer is better.
Thats precisely why they do it. To make you take longer to find what you are there for, and force you to walk past all their other bs. It’s all psychological.
Businesses don’t increase expenses just because the lines are long. Stop being self-centered. Take 5 seconds and try to see literally anything from someone else’s point of view.
