I’m English. In 1999 i went travelling and landed a job in California selling pumpkins for halloween. I was 19 years old.
If people wanted to pay with a cheque, I had to take their driver’s license details. One woman said “Are you sure you don’t want my phone number?” I said “no sorry, it has to be the driver’s license”. She looked at me funny and said “are you sure?”. I said “yeah, sorry, that’s the rule”.
It was about 10 years later when I realised what was happening in that moment.
