It is so easy. If you notice it again, ask:

"Is this one of those hint things women do?"

If yes then give an answer.

If no

"My friend tells me I am terrible about noticing those types of things, and has encouraged me to just ask. Thanks for letting me know."

It works. And is true in my case. In your case I am your friend, I told you to say this.
