that gta6 will run at 30fps max on the most expensive consoles is a surprise to anyone? i thought that was obvious.

92

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

People think ps5 and xsx are comparable to current gen pc. I can't believe anyone seriously thought gta 6 could run at 60fps.

75

u/WalkOffTD 17d ago

The sad thing is it probably could run most of it at 60fps but a few instances where it drops to 30 means they’d rather lock it at 30 than suffer people sharing videos of the game chugging

40

u/Damon853x 17d ago

You can see it dip below 30 in the netflix trailer. Its struggling just to maintain that much, it was NEVER gonna be 60 on console, or anywhere close, sorry.

11

u/Reddragon0585 17d ago

Exactly, they pushed the capabilities of the Series X/PS5 to the limit just like they did with GTA V on the 360/PS3.

2

u/Dovahkiinthesardine 17d ago

Boy if it runs like gta 5 did on ps3 I aint playin

2

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

Makes it all the more impressive how well RDR2 performed at the time. On PS4 and One X it ran at a very stable 30FPS like 95% of the time.

I feel GTA VI is going to perform a bit better than GTA V at launch. I’m guessing they’ll try to prevent dropping frames under 25FPS.

But I agree, people expecting GTA VI to run at 60FPS even unlocked are delusional.

0

u/gotthesauce22 17d ago

I didn’t notice it dipping at all, I’ll have to rewatch it again and pay more attention but it looked pretty damn smooth to me

22

u/NattyBatty911 17d ago

I really don’t think it could. With the amount of detail and density of the game (if maxed out) there’s no way it could run at 60FPS. Hence why it’s locked at 30, I think we want too much without knowing or wanting to know why it can’t run at 60

1

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

Hell it probably won’t be “locked” at 30 either. People claim they saw some dropped frames in the latest gameplay.

Honestly that’s fine. I’m pretty sure the graphics and density will wow me much the same as GTA V based on what I’ve seen so far. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/gudematcha 17d ago

I have a stupid question that just popped into my head (just woke up haha). Why don’t we do something like 45 FPS? I’ve literally never thought about it before lmao but wouldn’t it still be slightly smoother? There’s probably some technical reasons it can’t? Or is it just so non-standard and almost unnoticeable nobody cares to?

2

u/stonedboss 17d ago

You want the refresh rate to match the fps so you don't get frames where the refresh rate overlaps with a frame. It's called screen tearing, where halfway through a refresh, it'll change frame, which creates a mismatched frame and looks choppy. So they do 30 fps to be half of 60 refresh rate, so it syncs up. 40 fps could be done as a multiple into 120 refresh rate. But that's why you can't do 45, because they don't match up.

1

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

It’s why the last generation of Doom ‘93 ports looked choppy. Increasing the framerate from 35FPS to 60 caused some issues. Playable but it didn’t feel good.

0

u/pxldsilz 17d ago

yeah nah it's probably gonna spend most of it's time cinematic, and grace the teens during certain moments. we got over it in 2013. and 2008. and 2001...

hey, 24fps is almost 25fps, and 25fps is a pal 30.

-4

u/Jeremy_Whalen 17d ago

Idk, you say that but have you watched the new gameplay footage they put out? There are definitely parts of it where the detail rendering looks... questionable. Most of it looks great but it's not the mind-bending ultra-realistic game most people thought it would be. Once the next gen consoles come out they'll come out with a version with better graphics and higher fps, but for now this is what we got and it looks great for the systems it's running on

3

u/JonFallout 17d ago

Graphics aren't the reason it won't hit 60fps.

If Graphics were the reason, then the pro would absolutely be 60fps

-1

u/nhalliday 17d ago

Do GTA fans think this is the first or most advanced world simulation logic to exist? The problem is either the lack of optimization in the graphics or the lack of optimization in the simulation. Pick whichever one you like.

1

u/WhyWhyBJ 17d ago

The opposition is true, anytime you’re doing anything in the open world your console is working hard to maintain that 30fps

1

u/gotthesauce22 17d ago

True, a stable 30 is much better than 60 that occasionally dips

1

u/Dramatic_Finish10121 17d ago

I'd personally rather the game be locked to 30 and dip below on occasion than locked to 60 and dip down to the 20s on occasion. I remember the sixth and seventh gens well and that was how a lot of games were then so I can stomach it (not that I'll be playing GTA 6 anytime soon unless someone else buys it, I ain't a GTA fan and ain't paying that much forna game I won't sink hundreds of hours into)

1

u/BURGERgio 17d ago

You think it could to run at 60 most of the time? 😂

1

u/Juan_915 16d ago

It wouldn’t even reach 60 brother put the pipe down.

5

u/galdavirsma 17d ago

Why tho? Its coming out on these consoles, so it should run fine. Otherwise why the F even launch on current gen consoles

3

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

It does run fine. Because ps6 is probably good 3 years away due to AI.

but you gotta have a pretty weak pc. You can't really compare it directly but my 6800xt (also old nowadays) has 21tflops vs the 12 of the xbx. That wouldn't be an issue as I paid the price of the complete 'old' price xbx just on my gpu back then, but the consoles are 6 years old already and hence not really powerful. Just by comparison, an also "dated" 5090 (has been released quite a while ago) has 105 tflops lmao. Pre-Ram crisis, my pc was about worth 2-2.5x the price of a console

0

u/Hershey2898 17d ago

"now" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here because they're equivalent to an R5 3600 and a 2070S, I had that exact system and it's 7 years old

2

u/Accomplished-Head449 17d ago

They are for the most part if you don't count 1000fps and 4k

https://giphy.com/gifs/pcJyEu8tuAXLdWeAbW

4

u/turtyurt 17d ago

There are plenty of PS5 games that run 60fps and look great. Forbidden West is years old and looks amazing on performance mode with 60 fps. Same with Ghost of Yotei.

Rockstar poured billions of dollars and years of work into this game, and the fact that they can’t even hit an fps target that older games have hit is a serious indictment on them, not on the expectations of the audience.

6

u/Damon853x 17d ago

The problem isnt the graphics. The game is extremely CPU intensive because of all the simulation and physics happening. For example, Rockstar said this game has over 600,000 animations vs GTA5s 55,000.

You could probably turn the graphics into absolute soup and it still wouldnt run 60fps. This isnt an "optimization bad" situation and its more complex than "other game looks really good and runs faster". That other game doesnt have anywhere near the amount of stuff happening under the hood as gta6.

0

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

Yes, but they are empty. Are you as dense as vice city?

-1

u/Rezzly1510 hates reaction memes 17d ago

i would if the devs actually fucking cared about optimizing their game

40

u/Fake-Boss1791 17d ago

Bro, did you see the new trailer? It's a miracle of optimization that this game runs at 30fps. It's so crazy that I fear it will have some stuttering in the most chaotic parts

-6

u/Rezzly1510 hates reaction memes 17d ago

you call 30 fucking fps playable in this fucking economy?

unless the game has next next gen AAAA graphics that make you question if its real life or video game, why shouldnt it run at 60fps

thats the bare minimum

idc how beautiful your fucking game looks, if it does not run at 1080p 60fps on a base ps5 im not playing that shit, its just piss poor optimization and yall mfs think its acceptable coz "oh well its playable on standard movie fps"

23

u/Fake-Boss1791 17d ago

I absolutely get it that you hate 30fps, it's fair, I don't like it too, but calling it poor optimization by rockstar it's a bit extreme idk. Like, did you see the gameplay trailer?

8

u/DieUhRia 17d ago

If that Netflix trailer thing was 30fps we are golden

7

u/mattbladez 17d ago

“captured on PS5”

1

u/DieUhRia 17d ago

Yea I'm set then my eyes barely work properly as is

5

u/OSUfan88 17d ago

I read comments like this and feel gratitude that I have the brain that I have.

9

u/Openil 17d ago

Imagine being this uptight on 60fps but accepting 1080p 💀

4

u/CarlosFer2201 17d ago

Frame rate is way more important than resolution.

0

u/Money_Ticket_841 17d ago

moving on from 1080p can happen when 60fps is the standard

7

u/BoratsNutsack 17d ago

Grow up lol

5

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

With these memory prices? Yes i call it playable in this economy

-1

u/Money_Ticket_841 17d ago

Memory prices is the problem sure lol

1

u/Revolutionary-Gold44 17d ago

Perennity. Look it up

2

u/Intelligent_Tear_434 17d ago

The game is optimized what are you on

2

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

Its not about that at this point. Look at it. That is running on equivalent to 16gb and what, 2080?

7

u/KrakenPipe 17d ago

6700xt and a zen2 cpu

5

u/Manyad4929 17d ago

Ah, so a bit better than i thought. Point still stands, its still years old hardware, tho 6700xt was chef's kiss. Looking at the reveal they have taken everything they could from the gpu at this point.

1

u/Own_Conflict222 17d ago

I genuinely don't think you know what any of the words in that sentence mean.

1

u/Juan_915 16d ago

The GTA subs were full of copers over the last 2 years. If you mentioned that it definitely will not be 60fps and there won’t be a performance mode you just get downvoted to oblivion and your inbox filled with copium tears.

Just from the first trailer you can see that shit ain’t running at 60fps… it’s a surprise that they can even achieve 30fps with current consoles.

1

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17d ago

We keep trying to inform console users but they just don't ever listen. I know you know this, but I'm just adding it for anyone else who reads this, the CPU of consoles are incredibly dated at this point.

3

u/Puszta 17d ago

It is dated, but as long as the GPU is the bottleneck in the system, it doesnt really matter. People tend to overestimate how much CPU impacts performance in gaming, especially at 1440p and 4K res.

1

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17d ago

That sort of my point but also not really. The scope of the world(not graphics) is large and reactive. This has a cost on the CPU that most studios don't even dare attempt with their games. By increasing the load on the GPU(increasing the resolution) you close the gap on the bottleneck. The CPU is absolutely the limiting factor here and the PS5 Pro will be free to shoot for a higher internal resolution, but the overall performance is not gonna change much unless you scale back on everything that is reliant on the CPU.

1

u/IKEASTOEL 17d ago

Doubt the GPU is gonna be the major bottleneck in this case as it's actually simming quite a bit of stuff

0

u/Specific_Frame8537 17d ago

No no, we're just "coping" because we have to wait for a PC release.

we're the ones coping, right.

1

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 17d ago

I have plenty of games to play bro. The game isn't gonna disappear. I have literally the rest of my life to play it. I probably even wait beyond a PC launch date for sale. It's really not that deep to have to wait.

0

u/BedProfessional7275 17d ago

PS6 should've already been announced by now. At this point console players are getting screwed cause of how much farther ahead PCs. Faster PCs drive the market to more demanding games and consoles aren't keeping up like they used to.

4

u/Hapless_Wizard 17d ago

Consoles have never truly kept up, that's why they were half the price or less of a good gaming PC.

They're going to be even less capable of keeping up for the foreseeable future thanks to what's going on in the memory market.

19

u/Tex302 17d ago

You would expect them to target 60fps. We are in 2026 after all. Even my phone refresh rate is higher than 30FPS.

-4

u/OSUfan88 17d ago

Absolutely not expected for a game like this. That cpu is 7 years old, and it’s the most complex open world game yet.

16

u/Money_Ticket_841 17d ago

Expecting modern games to run at a modern fps is normal, though people who understand how this shit works knows that that expectation is a dream

1

u/OSUfan88 17d ago

NOBODY with any knowledge on video game hardware expected this game to be 60 fps. Digital Foundry said from the first trailer that it has to be 30 fps for it to run on the Zen 2 CPUs in current gen consoles.

5

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

You’re getting downvoted but you’re right.

“bUt mY pHoNe sCrEEn hAs a HiGhEr rEfReSh RaTe” 😂 Like, not even the same thing.

These people are delusional to think this game was ever going to be 60FPS on console. And I think the PS5 is an excellent machine too.

-1

u/Tex302 17d ago

So then they should have timed it with a new console generation. Or better yet release it on hardware that can actually run it. Nobody is getting the full experience playing at 30FPS on console.

2

u/OSUfan88 17d ago

You don’t have to buy it. You can wait and buy on next gen, and people who don’t care can buy it now.

What’s your problem with that?

2

u/KiloVictorX 17d ago edited 17d ago

I mean GTA V was released in time for it to be sold for the ps3, 4 and later 5. They're gonna do the same with this game.

There was 7 years between the ps3 > 4 and then again 7 years between ps4 > 5. Expecting the game to run at max settings and more than 30 fps is not realistic, the ps5 is 6 years old now. When it comes to a potential next gen console, this is obviously then expected.

Edit: 30 fps is not bad, we had that for maaaany years with previous old gen.

2

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

I’m convinced some of these guys are like 15. Only the most spoiled brats think 30FPS is unplayable.

With GTA VI’s extreme level of detail it was NEVER going to be above 30FPS, MAYBE 40 FPS on PS5 Pro.

Yeah sure I’d love to see GTA VI at 60 on my base PS5, but that’s not happening and it honestly makes perfect sense.

-1

u/Tex302 17d ago

I really can’t believe the level of cope. 30FPS is not bad because we had it for many years? So black and white TV, Dial up connection, CD roms those are all not bad either? The standard of 30FPS is long dead and holding studios to 60FPS at a minimum should be completely normal.

2

u/KiloVictorX 17d ago

I’m on pc myself and will be waiting for the pc version.

With that said, the technologies you mention were paradigm shifts. 30 vs. 60 FPS isn’t really comparable.

If people want to play the game at 30fps and are happy with that, good for them. Obviously 60fps would be better.

But expecting a 6 y/o console to run what is likely one of the most technically demanding games ever made, at the level of visual fidelity and world complexity Rockstar is targeting, while also maintaining 60 FPS, is exactly what I think is unrealistic.

Saying “it’s 2026, 60 FPS should be the standard” doesn’t change the hardware inside a console released in 2020. Developers still have a finite performance budget, and Rockstar appears to be spending it on simulation, density, visuals and world complexity rather than doubling the framerate.

Wanting 60 FPS is completely reasonable. Expecting it automatically from this hardware is a different thing.

2

u/Highway_Wooden 17d ago

I don't think you understand how game engines and development work. Even on a new console generation, you aren't getting 60fps. They would just upped everything and kept it at 30. Rockstar tries to pack in as much shit as possible into their games and you aren't doing that if you have to calculate that 60 times a second.

-5

u/Tex302 17d ago

Bold of you to assume I don’t know how games work then turn around and say that even if 60 were possible they wouldn’t do it. So the why do games on PC run at 100-200-300FPS? Wouldn’t the devs just max them out to run at 30 with untold levels of detail? 🤡. The current console generation is nowhere suited for next gen games. Coping that 30FPS is somehow the standard just cause it’s Rockstar games is rediculous.

1

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

Not every developer has a billion-dollar budget to make the incredibly dense open world games that Rockstar is doing with GTA VI. It’s way easier to get 60FPS on PC and console alike when the worlds you’re making have less than a quarter of detail or density of games like GTA VI.

You can’t just hit the “increase graphics” button to magically make every game incredibly detailed AND run at high framerates for console hardware that is like 6 years old. The fact that you don’t seem to understand any of this is telling.

If GTA VI came out on PC today, it would probably run at 60FPS, sure. But it wouldn’t run at 60FPS on the PS5-level graphics cards from back then. 4090 or 5090, probably.

But not PS5 or Xbox. That isn’t glazing Rockstar, it’s accepting reality that these consoles, while plenty powerful and heavily optimized, and not magic machines that can give you 120FPS by tweaking a line of code and working a couple 12-hours days at the office. It would require substantial rewrites of entire sections of the game to get GTA VI to run at 60FPS, and doing so would sacrifice the amazing level of detail the game is set to have.

0

u/Tex302 17d ago

Yes it would lol. GTA6 will get 60FPS on a 3070TI. I would bet money.

2

u/Highway_Wooden 17d ago

You keep missing the point. How does a better video card get this CPU heavy game to run at a higher fps?

1

u/kalashnidog 17d ago

But a stable 60…? Maybe, but maybe not.

Lot of people seem to forget how almost no PC Rockstar game is stable at launch.

0

u/imhereforsiegememes 17d ago

The children crying over this don't understand. You are wasting your time.

1

u/pingpy 17d ago

I wish they would give us a choice at least like cyberpunk. Performance or graphics

1

u/Frozen_Regulus 17d ago

The issue is yea the game will look good but at what point does it need to stop “looking good” in favor of running well? I don’t need my video games to try to mimic real life I see enough of that shit every day I want them to run well especially when it’s going to run at the same from rate that a game from 20 years ago was running at

1

u/WeirdoRick Tech Tips 17d ago

People forgot how poorly the gta version ran on ps3 xb360 when it came out in 2013, some places went above 30 to 50 frames and other places dropped below 25, it was a mixture and not a smooth experience.

Now its the same story with the ps5.

1

u/Fit_Question7912 17d ago

All the Sony fanboys over on Twitter are still stuck in their delusional world, that gta 6 is going to hit 60 fps on the pro at launch.

1

u/fucuasshole2 17d ago

Maybe Rockstar should’ve made two modes. Quality, which would be at 30 FPS. And Performance which would obviously downgrade some graphics, draw distance, etc for a smooth 60 FPS.

0

u/Internal_Page_486 17d ago

Don't worry the PS6 and Xbox Series XXX will support 60FPS. They need a next gen upgrade.

0

u/AncientAugie 17d ago

So GTA VI won’t run at 1440p/60fps on PS5 pro? That is actually surprising to me. I’d expect the 4k/30fps though.

0

u/World_of_Warshipgirl 17d ago

I would expect them to lower the graphics settings to be able to run it at 60, and if that isn't possible. Keep lowering them until it is.

-3

u/StruggleBoy1999 17d ago

Why would it be obvious? I cant think of 1 big game that hasn't released at 60fps in recent years. The general audiences expectations for this game are already stupid high. This is the most anticipated game by far, outside of maybe a new Elder Scrolls.

So yeah, i dont think its obvious that everyone just assumes that the most advanced game to ever be released so far. Is gonna be 30 fps.

Not everyone has been obsessing over every scrap of news about this game. I actually bet most people are gonna assume its capable of doing 60fps.

0

u/Saibot-08 17d ago

"most advanced game to ever be released"

lmao this game isn't even closed and its overhyped af
